The first night of the sanctuary did not begin with a scream. It began with an empty bed. I had checked on Liora three times before midnight. The first time, she lay curled beneath the blanket Linnea had chosen—soft wool, undyed, with no heavy embroidery that might feel like chains. Her face was turned toward the wall, her small shoulders drawn up as if even in sleep she expected a blow.

“Under the light of the Moon Goddess, on behalf of the Elders of Crescent Moon Pack, I name you Luna.” The moonlight surged. Silver light poured down, enveloping me completely—warm, heavy, undeniable. It pressed into my skin and sank deep, settling into bone and soul alike. The clearing pulsed in response, ancient magic awakening as the Moon Goddess herself sealed the bond. I stood there, glowing, grounded, claimed—no longer just becoming. I was Luna.

Bedtime. Usually, this was Aurora's domain. It was her sacred hour, the time when the CEO vanished and the "Maman" took over. She would read Goodnight Moon or The Little Prince, her voice a soft, rhythmic lullaby that chased away the dragons. But tonight, Liam stood in the doorway. He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt and sweatpants, his feet bare on the plush carpet. He held a book in his hand. Not a picture book. A chapter book.

She was reading the book Silver&Gold. “Ah, Luna. Good morning. How was your night?” “I enjoyed it quite well,” I said, moving to jump onto her bed. “You seem way better. It feels like you grew more cheeks overnight.” I laughed, “Grew more cheeks overnight? That's ridiculous.” “You look good.” I sat up, cocking my head.

“Now, go back to your beds and sleep before the other nuns notice y’all.” The girls did what they were told, and so did Luna. “Ah, I hate backyard gardening….” Mina said after a while. “You also hate it, right, Luna?” “Hm.” She covered her eyes with her forearm. “Sister Sola has your book, Luna. What are we gonna do now when we can’t sleep at night?” Dita asked afterward. “We have no choice but to sleep then,” Hana chimed in. “Good night, girls….”

NEAH Being Luna is nothing like I imagined. Not that I imagined it much. Two weeks ago I was planning to go to college and take over my mom's self-defense studio. Now I'm standing in the Iron Valley great hall wearing a dress Diane picked out while fifty Shadow Peak wolves stare at me like I'm a science experiment. Which, technically, I am. Liam stands beside me. Solid. Grounding. The bond hums between us and I focus on that instead of the eyes tracking my every move.

The courtyard lights make the iridescent sequins in her gown glitter. Though the bunched skirts do a fair job of hiding her fuller figure, my eyes are not so easily fooled.

Not fully awake, Luna heard the voice calling in singsong. "Hmmmm..." Luna hummed, stirring from her bed. Her comforter sliding off the bed. Rubbing her eyes awake, Luna sat up and tried to shake off her sleepy head. She instantly noticed the light coming from her window. She stood up and went to look outside. The wind is loud and strong. The trees are swaying. Its falling leaves whirled away by the wind forming waves and circles in the open air. The light coming from the moon shone bright, illuminating everything.

I replied but was interrupted by her scream. "What?" "I found the book you need," her cheek instantly reddened as well. "Let me see," I grabbed the book from her hand, gazing at the cover. "Seducing him," was written on the cover and I smiled when I imagined seducing him in my head. "Luna, we should go sit, you need to get reading," "No, pick up a book, anyone of your choice," she was shy at first but then, she picked up one of the books that was a romance novel. It wasn't lengthy and I was sure she would be able to finish it before we left.

It wasn't until she noticed the strange book tucked away in the corner that she was able to distract herself from her thoughts. "I almost missed one," she whispered. As she walked over to it, she noticed that its cover was worn, and it seemed to emit a faint glow that caught her attention. Maybe it's how the moon perfectly acted as its own spotlight that made it seem so glowy, but it's not just that. She somehow felt a little hint of amusement as she stared at it. As she approached the book, she saw the shinny title written on it, Lunaria, and she couldn't help but be intrigued. The moonlight shining down on the pages illuminated the words in a way that made them seem to come alive.
