She wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her hoodie and then she pouted. We were all silent, well they were. I'm always silent. The only thing you could hear was the radio on low volume and the crinkling bags as we ate. "Have you done it before?" Samantha suddenly spoke up. My eyebrows furrowed and I sent her a questioning look. "Killing someone..."

"We also require—" His voice buzzed in my ear like a persistent housefly. I had fully intended to remain a completely quiet spectator today, but this particular fly was just getting far too loud. I was genuinely annoyed now. Inside the deathly quiet conference room, every single executive kept their eyes glued to the table. Nobody noticed me back in my blind spot. And so, I moved. I took a single step forward, walking out of the shadows of the corner and stepping directly into the light.

But this time, she noticed that it was in her head. She did not recognize the voice but she somehow felt like she knew who or what was speaking to her. “Who are you?” She asked as she stood to her feet. She was a little bit nervous. “Am I going crazy?” She thought to herself. “I’m Silence, I’m your wolf,” The voice replied clearly. Clary was taken aback. She looked around and proceeded to find somewhere that she could use as shelter. “Why are just speaking to me after so long? Do you know how long I have longed to hear from you?”

If the ground remembers, then so does she. As they pressed on, the silence thickened until it seemed to press against their skulls. Mia tried to hum softly, anything to break the oppressive stillness—but no sound came. Her lips moved, her throat tightened, but nothing escaped. She froze. “I… can’t.” Damian tested it next. He spoke her name, but his lips shaped words without voice. Kael cursed silently, swinging his blade harder through the brush as though defiance alone could shatter the Fane’s hold.

Another knock. "Who is it?" Silence. Then Max's voice. "It's me." Nate closed his eyes. For several seconds, he didn't move. Then he walked to the door. His hand rested on the handle. He hesitated. Everything inside him screamed not to open it. But eventually, he turned the lock. The door opened. Max stood in the hallway. The party had left his face. He looked calm now. Serious. His eyes met Nate's. Neither spoke.

He opened his mouth to roar, to call his guards to kill me, to scream his defiance at the sky. But nothing came out. Damon’s mouth moved, his throat worked, his chest heaved with effort, but the only sound was the whistling of the wind.
