Just then, another blur of auburn burst through the onlookers. A second girl, identical down to the freckles and the frayed hem of her dress, skidded to a halt beside them, panting hard.
“Let her go!” the newcomer snapped, yanking her sister’s arm from Riven’s grip with surprising strength. “We were just playing; she didn’t mean to cross the path!”
They were twins.
I saw it in the way the silent one clung to her sister’s sleeve, and the way the sharp-tongued one shielded her with her body. The speaking twin glared at Riven, then at me, chin high.
