Honestly, I could not ask for a nicer day. As I enter the park, I can see a maze made out of shrubbery with benches scattered selectively throughout it. That looks like a great place to go to read a book sometime. There is a small creek that runs along the far side of the park and kids are running around with their parents keeping watch. Overall, it is a nice and peaceful park that I would not mind getting lost in for a while.

Then left before the conversation could continue. Back inside his office, the wrapped book still sat on his desk. Waiting. Walter picked it up. His thumb brushed the edge of the paper. The same way it had brushed the novel cover in her bookstore. Outside, Manhattan stretched endlessly beneath the afternoon sun. Millions of people. Millions of stories. Yet somehow one bookstore assistant had managed to do what investors, executives, and rivals never could. She had made him look inward. Walter stared at the skyline. Then at the book.

We end up walking to a small park a few blocks away, one of those neighborhood green spaces with walking paths and benches and kids playing on a jungle gym. The air is crisp and cool and I breathe it in deep, filling my lungs with something that isn’t the stale recycled air of the apartment. Jeremy walks beside me with his hands in his jacket pockets, not saying much, just letting me set the pace and the direction. I was their property, and I couldn’t forget that. The park was just a few minutes from the city’s central mall and I stopped the chauffer from taking the busier front entrance and instead decided to walk down the few blocks by myself. To my relief the men didn’t follow me, and I could FINALLY have time to myself. The kitten heels I wore made slight clicking sounds as I walked down the pavement, towards the park’s entrance. It was late afternoon by now and I could see several families enjoying their times together. It reminded me of my father and a sense of sadness filled me.

But honestly, seeing her was such a great blast from the past. I took a big breath of fresh air and let my shoes carry me over the pavement towards the park. The park was beautiful in early spring. Cold, yes. And not too much green. And it was still relatively light outside in the early evening. The scent of snow of melting winter and the expectation of spring was looming. And I wasn't cold. My nostrils flared at the teasing fragrance of flowers just beneath the surface of the gardens, set to pop out and bloom over the next month. It was peaceful here and I felt at ease. My feet carried me as my thoughts wandered.

Fueled with confidence, i set off towards the direction of the park, picking it as my starting point. The park was beautiful; I relished in watching families play in the sun as I walked past. It was slow walking as my feet hurt, even though I had barely done anything today.
