I couldn’t imagine Eddie having the patience for college. He held the door for me and we went inside. It was cozy. There were several tall tables with chairs as well as a few booths lining the wall across from the counter.

I groaned, but followed anyway. The café was right outside the campus. It was loud, students everywhere. We found a corner booth. Jake leaned forward before I’d even set my bag down.

The café was buzzing with the familiar chatter of students, the scent of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries wrapping around them like a familiar embrace. Cups clinked against saucers, the espresso machine hissed, and laughter carried across tables.
