I’m sitting in my favorite Adirondack lounge chair. The warm summer air is quiet and still, save for the distant buzz of cars easing their way down Henry Street. Usually, this is my favorite night of the week; an evening of carefree leisure, when the world’s troubles are held at bay by camaraderie and friendship, and beer and pizza, too. But tonight is different. Tonight, everything may fall apart because the things I’ve ignored for so long can no longer be dismissed and I must speak, risking at the very least our friendships, at the very worst this place I’ve come to call home.

Freya propped her bare feet onto the railing of her historical home’s wrap around front porch as she slumped back into her favorite Adirondack style chair. The sun was slowly creeping below the treetops, leaving in its wake a brilliant hue of reds and yellows that almost danced along the skyline. “I love this time of day,” she said in a soft voice to Marcus who’d just pulled a chair up next to her and was mimicking her seating style. “It has a certain ambiance,” he murmured as he lit a cigar. Tipping his head back and making smoke rings, he added, “I’ll give it that.”

ARIA'S POV By five in the afternoon, the sun had settled into the deep saddle between the western peaks, washing the terrace stone in a rich, honeyed light. The long ash table was set under the broad porch overhang. For six years, seventeen chairs had held the perimeter of the twenty-four-foot board. Today, Silas brought two sturdy oak benches up from the timber shop, setting them along the sunlit side of the table to make room for three more. Their names were Aaron, Clara, and little Sean.

The beauty of this place was ethereal. Under the colorful canopy that provided shelter and shade for us, were nice Adirondack chairs and hammocks that provided cozy comfort for us. Someone had dragged a cooler of wine into the circle and the whole gathering pulled their chairs close, and the night was warm and the air smelled like woodsmoke and grilled corn. Adrian appeared beside me and pressed a sparkling water into my hand. “I didn’t even say anything,” I said. “You don’t have to,” he said mildly, and disappeared. I ended up in a ring of chairs with two of the cousins and a woman named Diane who had known the Atwood boys since they were children. She was in her late fifties, silver-streaked hair pulled back with a clip, a glass of red wine that never seemed to get any emptier.

Avri and Dillon snuggled on the swing, and Dillon said, "That chair" - he pointed to a brown rattan cushioned chair with a matching footstool, adjacent to the swing - "is the most comfortable one out here." She sat in it and smiled. "It is pretty cozy." She wiggled her butt in the soft cushions. "And your glass of wine is right there on the table to your left. Have some," Avri said, after taking a sip of her own.

I flashed him a scowl and clung to his arm, allowing him to lead us to one of the seats in our surroundings. The tall trees surrounded the wooden bench in a circular shape, forming a shed above it, and rendering it somewhat secluded from the rest of the benches in the Park. André took his seat and I settled beside him, snuggling into him immediately. "We should do this often," I murmured, inhaling his familiar scent as I buried my face into his black shirt.

“This is amazing.” I breath in awe. My feet move automatically, weaving between the deep reclining sofas and high backed, spacious chairs. One of the chairs is so big it could easily fit 4 people on it, the curved back has holes and trays built into it. Christian laughs when I put a hand down one of hole holes to see how deep it is. “That’s for you to put your drink, so it doesn’t spill. The trays are for popcorn, sweets, nachos, French fries, burgers, whatever you fancy really. Not pizza though.” He laughs. My eyebrows knit together, why is that funny?

Cat said. Arianne leaned forward and blew a raspberry at the candle. We all laughed, and Cat puckered her lips, blowing quickly so the candle went out. "Alright, I'll get this sliced up. You guys relax around the fire," Adelle said, shooing us away from the table. I sat in one of the Adirondack chairs and Cat sat in the one right next to it. I reached over and took her hand. We had a perfect view of the sunset over the flickering flames.

In the distance, through bare-branched trees, was the waterfront, and the large amphitheater could be seen off to the left, approximately a half mile away, drawing attention as always. Nice view, James thought. They each took a seat in high-backed wooden rocking chairs around a small, square table boasting perspiring glasses of lemonade and a twine-tied envelope. Blakeney took a sip of his drink and settled back in his chair. He steepled his fingers and studied James for a moment. “So,” he finally said, “how are you getting along?” “Pretty good, I guess,” James responded, taking a drink as well. Wow, that’s good lemonade.
