He was the emotionally mature one of the twins, his intelligent eyes already told me he knew more than he should "Are you leaving Daddy forever? I think I miss him." Vance asked and I slowly nodded my head. I didn't want to tell the children something this hurtful but I had to. I knew without a doubt this room had cameras and he was watching our every moment. There was nothing I could do to make them feel better, so a silly thought calmed my head. "How about I tell you a bedtime story?" I suggested. They didn't say anything, but I went ahead regardless; my steady voice was the only thing that was heard in the room until they fell asleep around 10 pm. They were both snuggling to my side.

"I'll be looking forward to our next meal. It's getting late, so get some rest. Goodnight." "Absolutely, goodnight." I ended the call, and when I turned around, I was met with Daisy's inquisitive eyes. "Mommy, what did Nathan tell you?" she asked. "Nathan helped mommy out a lot." With the job situation resolved, my mood lifted. I closed my laptop and opened the storybook on the bedside table. "Sweetheart, what story would you like to hear tonight? 'The Ugly Duckling,' or 'Daughter of the Sea'?"

I sat with my back on the headboard while Aiden and Abby lay on either side of me, with their heads leaning against me as I told them as much as I could remember from one of the bedtime stories Celine and I were usually forced to sit through back at the foster home. We always found it boring and would be among the first kids to do off before she even read two lines from the story, the other kids would fall closely behind, it was that dreadful. But tonight, the kids found my old, half-complete, gap-filled story fascinating enough to listen to as I tried to lull them to sleep.

"I want to stay with you now. I miss you so much." "I know, sweetheart. How about Mommy tells you a really fun story? You get some sleep, and when you wake up, I promise I'll stay a few extra hours with you. How does that sound?" "You promise?" "Pinky swear!" I cross my fingers and kiss them. "Okay." I help him get comfortable in bed and sit in a chair to start telling him the story. "I want the story of The Girl with the Red Hood." "Oh wow, that's not exactly a bedtime story, Alex!" I grumble. "How about something more…"

“Mommy.” I looked at him instantly. “Yes baby?” “Can you read me a bedtime story please?” he asked sleepily. “Sure baby,” I quickly sat by him. “I’ll read it offhand. Is that okay?” He nodded. I went on to tell him a few stories I could remember from my childhood and by the time I was done, he was already fast asleep. I leapt to my feet and snuck out of the room. When I got to Malcolm and my room, he was not there.

Ronald said in a tired voice which earned a chuckle from Raina. As usual, They were tucking the girls to bed and Ronald was reading their bedtime story to them. He sat on the edge of the bed while Raina was in the middle of the girls' bed, her head against the headboard. Adrie and Alexa cuddled Raina with their tiny arms wrapped protectively around her five-month-old bump. Ronald was frustrated because they refused to fall asleep after reading three bedtime stories to them. "We want to spend more time with Jayden." Alexa pouted as she cuddled Raina's bump the more.

"You don't remember me. And I'm too old for them, but... Can you tell me a bedtime story? About anything." His daddy didn't laugh, ridicule him or hang up. There was a strange sound from the other end of the line before the man spoke quietly. "... course I'll tell you a bedtime story. Anytime." (If he wasn't so young and overwhelmed, he would've noticed how much of a struggle each word as.) "... upon a time, there was a brave pilot, who crash-landed in the desert and met a strange but kind boy. ... boy came from a planet far away ..." (1)

"No, baby, you have school tomorrow," I told him, getting into the bed beside him. "How about a bedtime story?" "Yes!" he squealed excitedly. I chuckled and brought out my phone. After a few pages of the children's book I'd saved on my Kindle, Adrian was fast asleep. Plugging my phone in, I settled beside him, stroking his dark hair away from his chubby face.
