I could not hide my uncertainty, fear, and I could see that he wanted to ease it, wanting me to know I was safe with him.
I shifted closer, letting our knees touch lightly, a small, deliberate gesture of intimacy.
His fingers felt warm against mine. I inhaled deeply, trying to calm the rapid beat of my heart. “I’ve been afraid,” I confessed. “Afraid to let anyone close, afraid to be hurt again… afraid of losing you before we even begin.”
“I know,” Dane said, his voice low. “I’ve been afraid too. Afraid that my own past would make me incapable of protecting you, of giving you what you need.”
