“What is it with people wanting to talk to me all the time now? I have lived the last several years, ignored and forgotten, and now, everyone wants to pretend like they give a damn!”
“What?” I said, surprised.
Brook turned her back to me, shoulders hunched. “Nothing.”
Oh, that was definitely not nothing. I walked up to her. “You may have lived like that before, but not any more. I won’t ignore you, Brook, and you are unforgettable to me. I swear, I give a damn and always will.”
I placed a hand on the back of her shoulder, but she shrugged me off. “That’s easy to say now.”
