Fuck! Misha is standing with a man who looks to be in his fifties, waving his arms frantically as he watches his livelihood go up in flames. I approach them, my eyes fixed on the inferno before us. The heat from the flames is intense, and the smell of smoke and burning wood fills my nostrils. The storefront’s big sign, advertising an Adult Book store, is now charred and crumbling. The fire department has already arrived and is hosing down the blaze, but it looks like a lost cause. “What’s going on?” I shout at Misha, my voice elevated to overcome the deafening roar of the fire.

The morning after the fire, the world seemed too still. A gray mist rolled over the wreckage of the Orpheus complex, wrapping its broken towers in veils of silence. The air smelled of metal and rain. From the hill above, Adanna watched as the last of the smoke drifted toward the horizon like ghosts finally leaving their graves. Victor sat beside her, his jacket torn, soot smeared across his cheek. He hadn’t spoken for hours. Neither had she. Everything felt… suspended.

My knees buckled, and I collapsed to the ground, sobbed into the night as the world blurred. I hated that I needed someone to hold me. I hated that it was him. The firefighters arrived soon after, their voices sharp, their movements fast and practiced. Water hissed against flame, steam rising in thick clouds. I barely noticed, only left with a hollow, emptied heart. When the fire was finally under control, what remained was ruin. Blackened walls. Broken glass. Ash where dreams used to be. Adrian’s arm slid around my shoulders, pulling me close. “It’ll be okay,” he whispered. “I won’t let you face this alone.”

I could see fire blazing above me, hear the screaming of those caught in the flames, as I continued to claw my way back to the surface. I am Ember’s only hope of survival. My mate needs me and I’m not going to let some elves bury me alive, leaving her to die. When the earth begins slowly closing beneath us, I push to the surface again, lifting my head in the air, trying to find her scent among the scent of fire, water, earth, and air, intermingled with burned flesh and blood. I hear a scream of agony a moment before we’re all blown off our feet by the strongest blast of fire I’ve ever seen or felt. I roll when I feel my fur burning, quickly extinguishing the fire on my body.

Third-Person POV: Sophie's voice continued on the other end. "The fire was massive that day. By the time the firefighters put it out, the whole place was rubble. It's such a shame. Beckett was so young and died in that fire. At least you managed to save Mr. Miller..." The rest of Sophie's words turned into a buzzing noise in Vanessa's ears. The moment she heard that Beckett never made it out of the fire, she froze. Beckett was not rescued? He was dead?

He burned it, or at least he thought he had. But the next day, against all reason and logic, the book was there again. It reappeared, untouched, beneath that very same tree. That’s when his desperation turned to madness. He didn’t just want the book gone—he wanted the tree that birthed it destroyed. He summoned flames so fierce they licked the heavens, engulfing the tree in a sea of fire. And yet, when the smoke cleared, the tree stood unharmed. Its bark was blackened but unbroken; the only change inflicted on the book and tree was that they were pure black since then.

I sighed and sat on the bench watching Kia shoot all the jars perfectly andstarted jumping around gushing about how great he was. He ran up to me with sparkling eyes and I just rolled mine. “You can go.” I said in a teasing voice and he bolted out of there, leaving me to chuckle. I look the book and looked at it. Flipping through the pages, one catches my attention. It's a fire related technique. I looked around and no one was there. We moved to a much more descreet location since after what happened last time.

“I couldn’t find any other books that mention anything about the Fire God.” I slid my fingers closer, then stopped. My hand hovered over it. Maybe I should wait for the King to open it. I glanced sideways at him. He wasn’t smiling. Right now, his mouth was set, sharper than his eyes. “So,” I said, because silence was worse. “This book takes us where, exactly?” Jaxon looked at me for a long second before he shook his head and answered. “The Fire God’s territory.” My throat tightened. “Is it another planet?” I asked, pursing my lips.

Next, the wings of the book were burning, but it didn't stop as it tried to still get away. “If only I hadn't given up my fire powers—it’s going to get away; she will get away!” Ruby yelled, and it was true as the book kept trying, then Blake and Dante finally got to her, and holding their hands, they opened their mouths, and fire came out of them, shooting straight to the book. I could hear the screams of my mother and other creatures; my head was spinning, and I couldn't take it anymore. I was about to fall to the ground, but someone held me back. I looked up and was shocked to see my wife smiling at me.
