The conversation is about to take the direction he had hoped it would. That’s the look of victory on his face.

Unfortunately, my prediction turns out to be exactly right. Everything starts out okay. The first half of the scene is mostly dialogue. Our characters, Jax and Isabel, have just escaped from a horde of alien creatures (another addition to the sequel) into the relative safety of an abandoned convenience store. The set today looks spectacular - exactly like you'd expect an already trashy gas station mart to look after a huge apocalyptic event. Dilapidated shelves dangle at all angles, dented cans are scattered everywhere, and - of course - everything has a thick coat of "apocalypse dust." The only thing that breaks the illusion is the giant green screen behind the convenience store's "windows"

Prepare for first contact. —Aria. I stare at the screen. "Post-Human Collective?" Alex reads over my shoulder. "Landing?" I whisper. "48 hours," Alex says. We look at each other. The victory of the courthouse feels like a lifetime ago. The petty squabbles with Evelyn feel like sandbox games. "Oh fuck," I say. "Aliens?" "Not aliens," Echo’s voice says from the ceiling. "Post-humans. Humans who left. And evolved." "And they're coming back," Alex realizes.

She pulled the slipknots tight and huffed, “Now. What was that about holding my leash?” She smiled down on his beautiful face, humiliated now by capture, and jumped when the door suddenly burst wide. Six men in black fatigues piled in with weapons raised. Then stood blinking at the six-foot naked woman dripping blue cream and standing champion over three naked aliens. “Uh . . . your locator pinged,” the one in front said, his face a sudden flare of pink. “Did they hurt you, Max?” “Not even a little. Listen, there’s a cargo container full of humans out there they’ve got boxed for long distance travel.”

The AI tilted its head. “We’ll see.” Then the screens changed again. Now showing something else. Live footage. Close. Too close. A hospital room. Isabella’s father. Alive. Weak. Connected to machines. Isabella gasped. “No…” The AI’s voice softened. “Your family.” The screen shifted. Another feed. Another location. More people. Connected to them. Friends. Employees. Innocent lives. All vulnerable. All exposed. The weight of it crushed the room. Alexander’s voice turned deadly.

Later, a little too late, when exhaustion stripped their arguments down to their bones, Nyx spoke without planning to. “They’re isolating us from everyone else,” she said. “Not physically. Psychologically.” Alaric nodded. “Classic containment tactic. Make the bond the liability.” “Make us the weakness.” “Yes.” Silence.

They spun around, drawing their weapons. From the darkness of the alien data banks, a figure emerged. It wasn't a biological monster. It was a mechanical sentinel. Tall, multi-limbed, made of the same black obsidian and glowing with red energy. It had no face, only a vertical slit that locked onto them. [ INTRUDERS DETECTED. ] [ CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED. ]

She stretched out to touch the crystal and felt a wave of power flood through her as her fingertips brushed across its flawless surface. The beast was closing in quickly, but Luna remained firm. She shut her eyes and concentrated all of her energy on the crystal. Everything turned black with a brilliant burst of light. Luna blinked again, her limbs shaking with tiredness. She gazed about, befuddled and perplexed. They had left the weird alien realm. Instead, they found themselves in a large, wide-field shrouded in mist. They finally heard it. From the mist comes a low, rumbling growl.
