It was the scent of static and a lingering, clinical fear. Sarah Sterling and Dr. Elias Aris were there to meet them, their expressions weary and professional. Beside them stood a young woman who caught Leo’s attention instantly. She had her father’s dark hair, but her eyes were a startling, iridescent blue that seemed to hold the depth of the ocean. This was Elena Aris, the first of the Drowned Humans to be born with a natural resistance to the Void Howl.

She tried to move off the bed. But the pain forced her to stop. “Please,” the woman said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You are not a prisoner.” Aria stared at her suspiciously. “Then why am I here?” “Because someone chose not to let you die.” Aria frowned. “Who?” The woman hesitated. Then she answered. “Ryan.” Aria didn’t know that name yet. But she would soon. ___________________________________ Weeks passed slowly after Aria’s recovery. "She fought it. I don't know how. She stuck the needle into Rita instead and just ran." I watched Ripley step into the small room. He didn't look at the unconscious woman on the floor. Instead, he picked up a glass syringe. He held it under his nose and took a long, slow breath. Ripley didn't just like drugs. He lived for them. He spent his nights mixing chemicals and his days testing them. He could tell you the exact molecular weight of a toxin just by the scent. A nasty grin spread across his face. "Our little pet has some fire in her. I think I'll enjoy testing my new batches on a girl with this much spirit."

Elena said with a relieved smile. Aliyah stepped inside a narrow hallway lit by a single bare bulb. The scent of boiled cabbage and old carpet filled her nose. Elena led her to a small room with a twin bed, a rickety dresser, and a single window looking out onto a brick alley. “It’s not much,” Elena apologized, “but it’s safe.” Aliyah sank onto the bed, exhaustion and relief mingling in her limbs. “I’m free,” she whispered. Elena perched on the dresser. “You are now Marina. Remember: no mention of Perez. No mention of Aliyah Haven. You’re a community college student from Marin.”

Axel said with remorse in his eyes. I didn’t blame him, perhaps Elias would have been hurt if he tried to intervene sooner. But I did thank Ripley for saving me and getting me back to Elias. Her resemblance to her mother scaring me more now than it did over the phone.
