I prompt, but he waves it off.
“It’s… nothing,” he says, swallowing hard.
A part of me knows there’s more to what he was going to say, but I don’t press it. Instead, I repeat my question.
“Do you think there’s a way to stop this thing hunting you?”
Axel looks away, his eyes drifting to a nearby bookshelf. “Shane believes that just like us, the creature is human underneath.”
“If we can find the man, we can stop it.”
As the words settle in the back of my mind, a relentless part of my brain starts to tug at pieces of information, like a puzzle. Like it did when I uncovered Axel’s secret.
