“I need to step down as an Alpha.” Everyone was ready to say no but I held my hand up. “I can’t let another surprise attack hit our pack,” I said. “We all know that I can’t sense if someone passes our borders because I have no wolf.” “You will remain as Alpha,” Leon said firmly. “Even if it means that we will double our runners on our borders, that's what we're going to do.” I looked at Leon, and I knew that Athena is slowly gaining his trust. Not that she needed to, but it does make my life a bit easier.

I kept my face void as we walked up to them, but slowly shook my head, it was a tiny movement but they saw it. The Alphas shook hands and greeted each other before we walked up the stairs and to James' office. The scent got stronger and I had to fight the urge to scan around for her. The need to have her in my arms, to feel her touch, and to hear her voice was becoming unbearable but I couldn't blow this. The fear was there too, the fear of standing by the Alpha's side and not getting more than a glimpse of my mate, more than a look, and then walking away again. I don't believe I had that strength in me.

One way or another. Standing up from my desk, I made my way out of my office and down the long corridor. Now, I just met his gaze, my expression utterly flat. “Of course, Alpha,” I said, my voice a agreeable tone. “I will have everything prepared precisely as you require.” A strand of confusion passed behind his eyes. This wasn’t my pattern. Something about my answer felt off to him. He frowned, but unable to figure out what was wrong, finally just gave a short nod before walking away. Perfect, I thought. Let him wonder. I turned and walked back to my room. I’d have everything prepared. I was going to give him a final performance he would never forget.

The Alpha had arrived. My heart hammered as I heard him approaching. The door opened, and he stepped inside. He was tall, his figure filling the doorway. His gaze was cold and assessing, as though he were looking at something he was about to buy. “This is her?” he asked, his voice smooth but carrying a chilling edge. Lycril nodded eagerly. “Yes, Alpha. She’s strong and obedient,” she said with a smile, as if she were presenting a prized object. “No trouble at all.”

He said, and I shook my head. "You have run enough experiments, Erik. We will settle for what you have already. The rash should be bearable," I said, and he shook his head. "The rash isn't as bearable as it seems. Ask Devin how he felt before we gave him something for the rash. We should also attempt the one that would tolerate alpha genes. Facing three hundred true Stepanovs would be challenging. They are swift and strong. You have seen Alexei, Clay, and Amelia in action. You have also seen me and Andrew. He gave her a strange look and then shouted, "Alphas!" Alex spun and sprinted up the stairs with Jack at her heels. More footsteps came in from below. The Alphas weren't far behind. Alex pushed harder and faster up the stairs. Jack breathed heavily. Hopefully he would be able to keep up. Alphas didn't need as much rest as humans, or even mods. They trained to live up to their full potential.
