We arrive at a simple cottage which is surrounded by flowers and herbs and I pause, “This is your home?” “Yes.” I follow her inside and she prepares a cup of tea for us and then sits down across from me, “You have one of my spells on you. You must be Lucas’s mate.”

I could almost feel his presence, though he was still far away. “I wasn’t good enough for his child,” Alaya said with a slight grin, her expression a mix of sympathy and resolve. She stood up and offered me a hand, helping me rise from the cold stone floor. In the moonlight, her fair skin looked almost angelic, just as it always did to me. I was anxious about seeing Alexander, and if this pregnancy truly was a miracle, I had no idea how to break the news to him.
