My uncle signed the order to kill my brother. I sit down on the wooden chair by the writing desk. I sit the way a man sits when his legs have stopped being a fact about him, when the bones and the muscle and the weight they have carried for thirty-four years simply cease to be something he can rely on. The chair creaks under me. The sound is small and ordinary and it belongs to a world I am no longer in. I read the page a second time. The words do not change. The code does not rearrange itself into something else, something that would let me un-know what I now know. The purple ink does not fade. The initial does not become someone else's.
