We strongly encourage our students not to wander into the forest. It’s not safe if you’re interested in staying alive.” I stare after her. Students? And how did she hear me from that distance? “My name is Annabelle for all those wondering,” she announces. “I hope you’re excited about the challenges that await you at Mistfall Wilderness Camp. My teeth chattered, but my thoughts burned. Mom was already rushing toward me. Her arms opened, trembling. “Anne, it’s okay. Come here.” I didn’t move. “Anne,” she said again, stepping closer, her voice fragile. She reached out and grabbed my wrist gently, like touching a soap bubble that might burst. Her touch hurt. It was too soft, too familiar, too safe. “No!” I tore my arm away and stumbled backward. Then I ran. The storm raged all around, but I pushed through it, sprinting toward where I knew Master and Dale had gone. I didn’t get far.

Annabelle couldn’t breathe. A giant weight pressed against her softly rising chest, threatening to pull her beneath the waves of sorry that crashed against her frail form.
