I hesitated but for a moment before walking to the reception desk. The receptionist was a tall, slender woman who wore dark red lipstick, her eyes razor-sharp, barely raising from her computer screen.
"Good afternoon," I said, forcing a polite smile.
She glanced up momentarily before returning to her screen. "Do you have an appointment?"
"No, but I need to speak with Mr. Carter. It's urgent."
Her fingers stilled over the keyboard as she finally gave me her full attention. "Mr. Carter doesn't take walk-ins," she said smoothly. "If you'd like to schedule an appointment, I can check his availability for next month.
