Apathy seems to be sinking its claws into her. There’s not a meal going by where Malachite isn't cruel. I still don’t understand why she can’t just let everyone be. Ruby wondered if there was a better reason than Jay being angry about being caught red-handed. For example, he regrets spreading poison gas and creating disaster for other people. Secretly, Ruby held a small hope deep inside her heart. "No, no! I've lobbied the receptionist to let you in at any time. It's just that I'm sorry... a little problem happened, and I wasn't prepared. The apocalypse is near.” Ruby’s gaze flicked to her for half a second — not unfriendly, just distant — before returning to me. “So?” she asked, one brow raised. “You free after school sometime? You could save a failing soul.” I hesitated. I didn’t know what to make of it. Ruby Padre wasn’t exactly the kind of person who asked for help. She was the kind of person people offered it to — for attention, for approval, for the illusion of closeness.

“We’ve been trying for eight hundred years, and we have nothing. No answers, no explanations, no solutions, nothing. What makes you think we’ll figure it out now all of a sudden? Because you have a new mate? She’ll end up in those catacombs like everyone.” I growl softly at the wolf. “You should leave,” I say trying to hold on to my temper. The butler storms from my room, slamming the door shut behind him. I sigh and bring Kaiya closer to me. She’s gone into apathy mode again, her favourite thing to do after she’s confronted with an ugly reality, locking out her emotions instead of dealing with them. "Kai-" I start, but she simply gets off my lap and takes her usual seat.

You’re lucky I even came to your aid–” “What’s going on?” I ask, noticing the slight hitch in Ryatt’s voice, which is totally unlike him. I imagine the worst–war. More attacks, more death.
