I let him have the last word. I had not planned to let him have the last word, it was not the kind of thing I did consciously. But somewhere in the middle of the argument I had looked at his face, at the particular animation of him when he was making a case for something, the sharp bright quality of his eyes and the slight gesture of his hand that happened when he was reaching for a point, and I had let the argument wind down and given him the last word because watching him make the case was better than winning.

He opened the folder again and looked at the images, not with disgust this time, but with the precise, calculating gaze of someone studying an opponent's hand. "Someone spent considerable resources building this problem for me. Which means a denial, however well-executed, is a temporary solution. They will simply build another problem. Another story. The same habit. Building the case from my own evidence without locating it.” “Yes,” Dr. Voss said. “It is the same thing. And it’s fixable for the same reason — you know how to locate yourself, when you’re willing to do the work.”

He said. His tone was so certain, like he believed in me… more than I believed in myself. I looked at him properly then. He looked exactly the same as he always did, but today, there was something else there to him. Something quieter. Something grounded. “They don’t need to,” I said. “They just need enough people to believe it.” Nathaniel’s gaze didn’t waver. “That’s the problem with narratives,” he said. “They don’t need to be true. They just need to be convincing.”

“But not just any manual. The story of… of writing the manual. The drafts. The committee meetings about font size. The argument over whether to call it ‘dough’ or ‘batter’ in step three. A few exchanged glances. Nobody disagreed. Nobody agreed. The silence said enough. Cassandra straightened in her chair. “You’re protecting people.” “I’m respecting them.” “You can’t tell a meaningful story without showing consequences.” “You can’t tell a meaningful story by manufacturing them.” The argument continued for nearly thirty minutes while neither side gained ground because the disagreement wasn’t really about editing anymore and had evolved into something much larger, while everyone involved gradually realized we were discussing two entirely different philosophies about storytelling.
