The novel explores themes of survival, ambition, and the lengths people will go to for a better future, all set against the backdrop of a lunar colony that’s as dangerous as it is fascinating.

I picked up 'Artemis' after absolutely loving 'The Martian', and honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. The main character, Jazz, just never clicked for me—her voice felt like a forced attempt at a witty, street-smart archetype rather than a real person living on the moon. The heist plot itself is fine, but the world-building felt thin compared to the meticulous problem-solving that made Weir's first book so gripping. If you're into very tech-heavy, engineering-puzzle sci-fi, you might still find some enjoyment in the systems and how life in Artemis functions. I'd say borrow it from the library first before buying.

That said, the actual depiction of a lunar city economy and the day-to-day logistics are pretty cool ideas. It just didn't come together for me like I hoped.

I honestly had a bit of a love-hate thing with Artemis herself when I first read it. Jazz Bashara is absolutely the main character, no question. She's this brilliant young woman stuck as a porter in the first and only city on the moon, and her big goal is to make real money so she can move up from the slums to a decent apartment. Her motivation feels so grounded, almost petty, but in that grimy lunar setting it makes perfect sense. She's not trying to save the world.

What stuck with me was the sheer, small-scale desperation of her hustle. The whole central heist plot she gets pulled into is basically her chance to leapfrog the entire lunar class system in one go. She wants financial security and respect, which are incredibly hard to come by in that cutthroat, corporatized bubble. It's less about grand ambition and more about survival with a bit of dignity, which I found way more compelling than some galactic-scale conflict.

The ending left me a little cold on her, though. You see how her cleverness and cynicism box her into corners. She achieves something, but the cost feels real, and the goalposts for what she actually wants seem to keep moving.
