Alright, so I've been neck-deep in 'House of the Dragon' fics for a while now, and the Jon Snow/Rhaenyra Targaryen pairing always felt like a natural fit the show itself didn't deliver. It's that 'what if' that just clicks. If you want the heavy-hitters, you can't miss 'The Ice Dragon' over on AO3. It's a massive time-travel epic where Jon goes back to the Dance era. The author gets the political maneuvering so right, and the slow-burn between him and Rhaenyra is agonizing in the best way. The character voices are spot-on—Jon's world-weariness against Rhaenyra's fiery, desperate determination. It's long, but you get completely lost in it.

A shorter but brilliantly executed one is 'Of Fire and Blood.' This one goes the soulmate mark route, but it's not cheesy at all. The premise is that their marks only appear when one of them is in mortal danger. So you get these intense, life-saving connections across time that build this profound bond before they even meet. The writing is gorgeous, very introspective. I reread it whenever I need a hit of that tragic, destined romance vibe.

There's a certain pull to Jon/Rhaenyra that I think taps into that classic 'what if' energy, but with a Targaryen-centric twist. You see a lot of time-travel or fix-it fics where either Jon goes back to her era, or she ends up in his. It's less about the political marriage of convenience and more about two people who've been crushed by duty and prophecy finally finding an equal. They're both heirs who got screwed over, so there's a ton of shared trauma bonding. The 'dragon has three heads' thing gets invoked a lot, positioning them as the missing pieces to each other's destinies.

Fire and blood symbolism is everywhere, obviously. Fics love to contrast Jon's experience with Ghost and the cold North against Rhaenyra's connection to Syrax and the heat of Dragonstone. It creates this interesting dynamic where he's the grounded, melancholic one and she's all fierce, defiant passion—at least at first. A lot of writers enjoy having them challenge each other's worldviews; Jon's more honourable Stark upbringing clashing with Rhaenyra's ruthless, survivalist court lessons.

You'll also find a surprising amount of fics that essentially use the pairing to sidestep the Dance of the Dragons entirely. If Jon shows up and backs Rhaenyra with a grown dragon and future knowledge, the Greens don't stand a chance. Those can be fun power fantasies, but my favourites are the quieter ones where they're just two lonely people figuring out how to trust someone who speaks the same painful family language.

Alright, I've stumbled on a few of these and the concept is always a wild trip. The writers aren't just mashing two royals together because they have silver hair. The core tension plays on legacy and subversion. Jon, the hidden heir raised in humility, paired with Rhaenyra, the declared heir fighting for her birthright. It creates this fascinating mirror. She sees in him the pure, uncomplicated Valyrian lineage she's fighting to secure for her own sons, while he sees in her the unapologetic claim to power he was taught to shy away from.

A lot of stories I've read use their marriage as a political solution—Viserys trying to shore up Rhaenyra's claim with another Targaryen line. The drama comes from their totally opposite lived experiences clashing. She's been playing the throne game since she was a girl; he's been surviving beyond the Wall. The best fics make them teach each other. She learns a kind of gritty resilience, and he learns to stop hiding and actually wield his name. Sometimes it feels less like romance and more like a mutual coronation.
