The cold wind whipped through the barren landscape as Asha and Darian trudged forward, the snow beneath their boots crunching with every step. Their breath misted in the freezing air, and the shadows of the Greywatch Spire loomed behind them, a dark silhouette against the starless sky. The sounds of pursuit—the growls of Blood Pact Beasts, the shouts of the royal guard—faded into the distance, but Asha knew it wouldn’t last. They had only just begun their flight, and the storm was far from over.

My breath caught. Nothing Spiro had said prepared me. Not really. Beyond the barrier lay a wasteland scorched with ash. The sky was a colour I had never seen, dark bronze near the horizon and bruised red higher up, as if sunset had burned into the heavens and never fully gone out. The ground stretched wide and broken, black in some places, grey in others, cracked by veins of dull red heat far beneath the surface.

The Ashen Peaks loomed ahead, their jagged silhouettes cutting through the bruised sky like the teeth of some ancient beast. Smoke curled from their summits, and the air carried the acrid scent of sulfur, a constant reminder of the volatile land they now traversed. Aria shifted Rollan in her arms, his small weight a steady comfort against her chest as she picked her way across the uneven terrain. The group was weary—muscles aching, spirits frayed—but they pressed on, driven by the knowledge that the cultists were still out there, hunting them.

“Do you like it?” Josh asked, his voice soft, almost hesitant. Ashley turned from the inner balcony. After finishing her makeup, she returned to the window sill and gazed again at the silhouette of the evening sky, which was beginning to glow orange between the tall buildings of Los Angeles. We walked along the beach with large goofy smiles on our faces but mostly mine. ‘how did you do that?’ I asked linking my arm with Asher's. ‘do what?’ He asked in return. ‘The sky writing thing.’ I replied. ‘Oh that, you like it?’ ‘yeah, I do. They freaking spelled my name in the sky.’ He laughed. ‘that's the work of a skywriter. I can do more for you if you’d like.’ He said pulling us to a stop and pressing a kiss to my lips.

Ash shivered at the tingling sensation of electrical sparks all over his body, every time he and Alexander held each other. It was only then that Ash heard a loud explosion that made him jolt in alarm. He tensed as he suspected there might be another attack being launched on the river. "What was—"Ash started but stopped when the both of them, together with the rest of the people in the park gazed above and saw the most beautiful picture in the sky. In front of the thousand stars and the shining radiance of the full moon, the sky was painted with different vibrant colors. Ash anxiety dissipated as he looked at Alexander again, who was wearing a breathtaking smile.
