I commanded. Flashback ends… And then, earlier today, a few hours ago— Flashback… I was at the Alpha’s site, my eyes glued to the screen of my desktop. The security department had delivered the footage I requested. On the 5th of this month — the night I chased that assassin and got to Sky’s dorm. I knew it was impossible to watch a whole day’s footage, so I chose the specific time I wanted. 7 p.m. I watched the entrance clip as students trooped in and out of the dorm.

I stumbled after him, heart pounding, watching Tyler's silhouette grow smaller as we climbed. Through a door. Up narrow steps. To a glass wall overlooking the scene below. A front-row seat to murder. Norman positioned me in front of the glass, his hand still on my shoulder. "Best view in the house." I looked through the glass. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears. The assassins circled Tyler, slow and deliberate, playing with their prey like wolves with a wounded deer. Then my gaze shifted. The depot below was empty, no workers, no witnesses, no one. But at the edge of my vision, at the far corner near the loading bays, I saw movement.

I said. “I’d rather die.” She spat and grabbed the linen. She hissed as she stumbled out of the class. The back of my head ached. Fuck. I was usually more controlled and level headed than this. So, what the hell was I doing? “Let’s begin.” I said, and walked to the front of the class. I waved my hands and all the tables and chairs disappeared, leaving shifting grounds. “The class for today is Shifting.” I said, and was about to continue when my watch buzzed. The watch was different from the Academy's main wristwatch.

I usually find trackers in my room and I know there is surveillance in my room and it wasn’t Thane White, Serena’s father doing. No sane man would watch live footage of his daughter’s room, that’s if he isn’t a crack who has incestuous fetishes. So far my evaluation says he isn’t nuts! Truth be told I didn’t even give a damn who it was. If I was to do something about it, it would alert the culprit to be more stealth and Mr. White seemed to know about them. It was just a theory, but I am sure the resident of this house tends to ignore the skeptical all the while questionable behavior of some of their staff.

My mind raced, calculating my options. I could fight. I could disarm the officers before they had time to react, create a diversion, disappear into the night. But that would mean more blood. More innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. I glanced at the terrified faces of my classmates, their wide eyes reflecting the image of a monster. They weren’t just looking at a criminal—they were looking at something inhuman. It hurt more when looking at Mason and Abel, they didn't recognize me. They looked at me like I were the devil.

Mom and I could only accompany her and try to always be by her side. A few moments later, Mark knocked on the door, then entered the room carrying his tablet. “Sir,” he greeted me. “Yes. What is it?” I asked. “There’s something you need to see.” He handed me his tablet. A video appeared on the screen. It was CCTV footage of the assault on Hannah that had taken place some time ago. The video showed three mysterious people wearing black clothes, jackets, and hats entering the women’s restroom after Hannah entered. One of them was even carrying a strange package in his right hand.

He suggested, which was surprisingly helpful. I thanked him and left his office. I couldn’t go to the security lounge right away because I had class to attend. Once it was over, I was in the lounge, asking for the footage. However, I was disappointed when the footage didn’t show Willow. Instead, it was a bunch of guys that I couldn’t tell who they were because they were covering their faces with their hoodies. I could tell they were from Leo’s class because one of them was wearing the same basketball jacket that Leo had at lunch earlier. Thanking the security for their time, I dejectedly went back to class.

They both look like dictators reigning above everyone. Keeping my eye on both of them, I signal Connor and gesture to the two targets. Connor moves close and nudges me forward. Just as we’re about to move, a shot rings out across the room, and pandemonium ensues. I glance back to see our assassins fighting and then look back up and rush forward when I see that the Senator and Kennedy Lynch are running away. As I’m nearing the stairs, a man appears and takes a swing at me, but I’m ready. Gripping his wrist with both hands, I kick him in the kneecap, twist his arm behind his back and put pressure until I hear the sound of bone breaking. “Watch it.” I didn’t sit. I didn’t speak. I watched. Image by image. Frame by frame. My jaw locked somewhere between the first photograph and the second line of text. By the time the hospital footage flickered to life, something colder than anger had settled into my marrow. Precision. Access. Intent. This wasn’t a random intrusion. This was architecture. When the screen went black, I didn’t look up immediately. The image of Alessa, unconscious and vulnerable, being watched by a ghost, played on a loop in my mind.
