The flames illuminated the surrounding dunes in a flickering, orange glow, casting long, dancing shadows.
We didn't stop. We ran until our lungs burned, collapsing finally behind a large, sheltering slope of sand. I lay on my back, panting so hard I thought my ribs would crack. My father was on his hands and knees, coughing violently, his body shaking. Anthony was on one knee, his gun held ready, his chest heaving. Ame had taken a position at the edge of our cover, his gun pointed back toward the burning wreck, his eyes scanning the darkness.
For several minutes, the only sounds were our ragged breathing, the crackle of the distant fire, and the mournful sigh of the desert wind.
