"That is a better sound," Cale admitted. "Yeah. Focus on that." They sat on the couch. Cale picked up The Hobbit. "Read to me," Elion said. Cale opened the book. "Chapter Two. Roast Mutton." He read. His voice was steady, rhythmic. The sound of the words filled the room, pushing back the echoes of gunshots and car crashes.

I wasn’t even sure if he’d gotten everything settled with his frat brothers when he drove me to the airport in the morning. I tried to let those thoughts fade away while on my flight home. I put in my earbuds and decided to listen to one of the smutty werewolf audio books Hana has gotten me hooked on, Alpha Gray by CJ Primer, with Theo and Maddie as narrators. The book is HOT, and Theo’s voice… yeah, it makes for an enjoyable two-and-a-half-hour flight. I love how he changes his voice when speaking for each Alpha. Hana told me they’ve done the narration for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to listen.

He still puckered his lips and furrowed his eyebrows like he used to as a kid when he was focused on what he was doing. I chuckled, making him turn toward me. "Hey, sis. When did you get here? I didn't hear you walk in." he asks, making me roll my eyes as I smile foolishly. I kissed his cheek and sat next to him. "Just now. What are you reading?" I asked, making him clear his throat as he looked at the back of the book and showed me the cover. "Uh, Pound The Stone, by," "Joshua Medclaff," I said, feeling proud. "Good choice," I added, making him chuckle. "So you've read it?"

We all slid into the leather seats, Atticus climbing into the back and immediately pulling out the children’s chapter book he’d been obsessed with all weeks. I could already hear the pages flipping as he settled in, legs crossed like a little professor. I glanced over as Alex started the engine, the quiet hum of power filling the cabin. The car ride was smooth, the city passing by in blurs of late-afternoon light. Atticus was quiet in the back, mouthing words as he read, fully immersed.

And no doubt, have hot dreams about it. It’s another book suggestion from her. I’ve just finished the last one she recommended, and honestly, I shouldn’t dive into another. Once I start reading, I lose myself completely. But this time, she’s telling me to listen to it. Audiobook. That’s new. Before I even realize what I’m doing, I click the link she sent, and in a matter of seconds, the book is purchased and playing through my home speakers. I settle back in bed, letting the narrator’s deep voice wash over me, and within moments, I realize Lucy’s sent me a stalker romance. Great.

She sat down behind the bus driver as the doors closed behind her. Ellie pulled out the phone her mom had given her in the car before they had left and turned it on. She scrolled through the apps, noticing a notification indicating she had 3 new text messages. She ignored the notifications and opened the audiobook application. Her finger scrolled through the books loaded on the phone and the books she could d******d. She pulled out the headphones that came with the phone, plugged them in, and scrolled through the preloaded classics on the app. Tears came to her eyes as she saw Pride and Prejudice. She hit play, settled her head against the glass window, closed her eyes, and listen to the soo

“We improvise it live.” Pauly handed her a slim, battered paperback—Mockingbird, cover worn, pages gutted to hold a wafer-thin transceiver and a micro-SD slot. “Your new copy. Same weight as the real one. Press the title twice if you’re burned; it wipes your last three hours and plays an audiobook. Press the author twice and it pings us with location.” She slid the book into her tote without looking. “And if I press the spine?” “It complains about being objectified,” Pauly said.
