When he nodded encouragingly, she rose and scanned the shelves, eventually pulling out a leather-bound book. Sitting back down, she opened the book with careful hands, flipping to the first page. Her voice was soft and slightly shaky at first, but as she continued, Julian found himself genuinely enjoying the gentle cadence of her words. After a few minutes, he spoke up. “You’ve got a soothing voice, Iris. You should read to me more often.”

I read for eleven nights. Their eyes began to wander—clearly, Cecilia's reading wasn't holding their attention. But Cecilia remained oblivious. She was lost in her own performance, reading with growing intensity as if she were the main star of the story herself.

Alicia muttered, flipping the book open. They decided to take turns, each reading a chapter aloud in a low voice. Kevin’s tone was steady, smooth, the kind that could make even dry text sound alive. We check out the maximum number of books that we’re allowed, and we finish most of them before the next visit. We are both speed readers and enjoy learning as much as we can on almost any subject. But I can’t read on the job, so despite the library having free books on audio, most of my day is spent in silence.

“I like the dragon.” “Of course you do,” Nolan says. “The dragon is cool.” “What about the boy?” I ask. “He’s brave too.” “He’s okay,” Nova decides. “But the dragon is my favorite.” “I’ll read the next book,” Noah says, taking the book from my hands. He doesn’t clear his throat or hesitate. He just starts reading where I left off… And I remember. I remember this voice. The cadence that used to pull me through late-night study sessions because he’d read my notes out loud when I was too tired to focus. We'll see if this is any good." Smiling, Emma flips the book to the first page. I wiggle a bit to get comfortable and put a pillow behind my lower back. Emma waits for me to relax and close my eyes before starting to read, and she speaks softly for me. Her voice flows into my ears, but I barely hear her words. My focus is on the way her tone changes with different characters, the way her voice rises and falls, the way she chuckles breathily when she reads something amusing. She sounds divine to me.
