I wanted to fill my stomach the way I’d been filled last night. As I ate, a shadow crossed my table. Andre’s voice followed. “Mind if I sit?” he asked. I didn’t answer right away. I sipped my orange juice before replying. “If you’re going to sit, get me more bacon.” He laughed. “Yes, ma’am.” Then he left. He returned with two plates. One held a mountain of crispy bacon. The other had watermelon, eggs, and a muffin. He set them down proudly.

“Sure, give me a minute to finish this. You hungry?” “Starving. Where did the bacon come from?” “There was an ice chest waiting for us on the porch. I brought it inside yesterday so it would stay cooler.” Eggs and bacon were fine, but I needed healthy carbs to keep me going. “Any chance there’s fruits and veggies in there?” “I think there’s some papaya and a few other pieces of fruit.
