I exhale loudly and make to snap the book shut but the sharp end prick my finger. With a hiss under my breath, I press my finger tightly as tiny drops of blood trickles down. The blood drops on the page and like a mystery, words begin to form, unraveling themselves. I watch with shock, my heart pounding against my ribcage at the swirling letters that aren't there before. As soon as it starts, the strokes end. I glance warily at my finger which has healed instantly and with my pulse spiking, I read the words; ‘Rare is the blood born beneath the crimson gaze of the moon,

Instinctively, my hand rested on the hilt of my sword as I stepped beside him. He picked up the first book on the stack: The Compendium of the First Blood. It was a book so old its pages were made of cured vellum that should have lasted ten thousand years. I watched as he opened it and gasped. Cold rushed through my veins—the book was mutilated. "This is the chapter about the ancient evils," Orion commented as he flipped the pages. It seemed like something, or someone, had reached into the book and torn off the pages with claws. I suppressed the anger bubbling to the surface at such damage done to something so historical.

I thought of the world that was currently waking up to a silence it didn’t understand. But as I felt that tiny, second heartbeat pulse against my palm, I didn’t feel like a fugitive. I didn’t feel like a victim of a global conspiracy. I felt like an Architect. The first book was about the blood. It was about the betrayal and the breaking of the old world. It was about the trauma of the glass and the roar of the mountain. But the second book? The one we were starting right now, in this quiet French valley? That book was going to be about the Home.

“Wait—” Bang. Blood splattered the wall behind him as his body hit the couch, lifeless. Collins walked over, calm as ever. “He thought he was untouchable.” I exhaled smoke, watching the blood pool beneath his shoes. “Nobody’s untouchable. Especially not thieves who bite the hand feeding them.”

Why was blood flooding the lower area of Camila's body? "Camila, what-what happened to you?" asked Alex numbly. "I didn't know that I was actually pregnant, and I'm bleeding. I'm... in pain, Alex...." Camila said again ending with a hissing sound of pain. For a moment Alex forgot about his purpose in coming here to save Angelina because the first thing that greeted his gaze was Camila. But now Alex winced when he realized there was no Angelina there. "Where's Angelina, Roy? Are you trying to set me up?" Alex asked in a high tone.

The sight was truly pitiful, and it made me nauseous, but it was his weakening heartbeat that shook me to my core. I ran to him grasping him immediately ripping the chain around his arm, bearing the brunt of his weight. “Fuck, you’re beautiful. I must be dreaming, right? You’re not really here, are you?” “This is no dream. I’m here. I’ve come for you. Do not try to speak. Have my blood.” My fingers traced his check softly as he looked up at me with awe while I prepared to break the skin on my wrist to feed him my blood.
