I groaned at the growing discomfort that now radiated through my entire body. "What now?" I muttered. The discomfort intensified. My skin began to heat up. A strange ache settled low in my abdomen and pulsed with each of my heartbeat. I sat up, suddenly alert. Something was very wrong. The heat came in waves. It was not the heat from fever. It was something else. It was a something that made my entire body feel hypersensitive and restless. My breathing instantly quickened. My hands started to tremble. No. It couldn't be.

It’s after twelve. My head is a little woozy and stuffy as it’s ridiculously hot in the office now, stiflingly so and it’s making me feel nauseous. I’ve called maintenance twice to find out why they still haven’t fixed the AC yet, it’s blowing out tropical heat, rather than cold air and baking us all. My face is flaming, and my pulse is beating so fast and hard, like I’ve been sprinting. My clothes are almost clinging to me with dampness, and I’m irritated because of the inability to breathe or find relief. It’s oppressive.

“Why don’t you start by telling me why you’re here?” I swallowed hard and nodded, setting the file down on her desk before taking a seat in the chair opposite her. “I’ve been having these strange pains in my chest and a pulsing sensation in my temples,” I began, trying to keep my voice level and calm despite the fear bubbling inside of me. “And lately, I’ve been getting these random hot flashes.” Dr. Sykora’s face held a slight frown as she scribbled something down in the file I placed on her desk before setting it down and folding her hands together thoughtfully. “Have you ever experienced anything like this before?”

But why did I feel like I couldn’t breathe? When the heat rose from my stomach and began to spread throughout my entire body, I grabbed my blanket and laid down again, coiling under it. What’s happening to me? I gripped the blanket tightly against my chest and closed my eyes. I could feel the heat churning in my stomach, but I felt cold at the same time, and it felt like somebody was drilling into my bones. "Call me if you experience any of the following symptoms: stomach cramps, gum itching, or pain digging into your bone."

"Have you been feeling exhausted? Nauseous? Are there certain smells you suddenly can't stand?" Her expression changed in an instant.

I told her reassuringly. She nodded, gathering the tray with silent efficiency and retreating to the kitchen. I stood slowly, the shift in gravity making my head feel….light. Wrong. The floor tilted slightly beneath my feet, just enough to make me pause. A buzzing had started in my ears. I pressed my fingers to my temples, thinking it was just stress. Lack of sleep. Maybe a drop in blood sugar. But the warmth in my stomach had shifted. It wasn't comfort, it was heat. Spreading, twisting, turning into something foul and foreign.
