Each paragraph layered recognition onto fear until my chest felt tight with it. I had not been hungry in days. The meals arrived on schedule. I sat at the table. I lifted my fork. I swallowed because eyes were on me, because not eating invited concern, and concern invited oversight. But the desire was gone. Food felt foreign. Heavy. Negotiated rather than wanted. I read until my eyes burned, until the words blurred and I had to pause, pressing my fingers into my temples as a headache bloomed behind my eyes. The pressure in my abdomen returned in slow, uneven waves, tightening and releasing without rhythm.

I squeezed her hands and said as confidently as possible, “Don’t worry…..this phase will pass too.” She nodded her head and continued with her work. I was wondering how I could cheer her up when my stomach growled in protest. It wasn’t like the usual pang of hunger. it was as if something was gnawing my insides. The intensity of hunger I felt these days had increased. I decided to go to the kitchen and see if I could find something to eat. There was no one in the kitchen but there were two plates of pasta on it. I went closer and took a whiff. It smelled heavenly. I couldn’t resist and started wolfing down the pasta.

hunger. I was too pregnant and too damn hungry right now to play detective. The pup’s energy flickered weakly, like a tired protest, tugging at my ribs as if to say 'feed us first, think later'. I rubbed my belly gently, trying to soothe it, but the emptiness gnawed harder, making my head swim and my legs feel like lead even sitting down. I leaned forward, tapping the driver’s shoulder. “Speed up,” I said, voice flat but firm. The man glanced back in the rearview mirror, eyes hesitant under his cap, but he nodded once and pressed the accelerator.

’ “Anyways, work faster. You still have a lot of work to do. “ With that, he left laughing with his people. One man even looked at me like I had two heads. Some minutes after they left, my stomach began rumbling loudly. I tried silencing it but it merely became worse, aching so hard that I couldn't stand anymore. I could feel my intestines getting entwined with each other because of lack of food to process. "Ahhh!" I screamed to myself as I try to alleviate the pain by massaging my stomach. "Please, please, please. Not now dear stomach, please endure this one." I pleaded to my own stomach while trying to look for some leftover food.

The next day, Amber woke up with a headache. After her last job at night, she suddenly felt dizzy while riding the bus. She slowly got up and suddenly felt hungry when she heard the sound of her stomach. “Didn’t I eat last night?” she asked herself. She immediately left the room and looked for food in her kitchen. She was disappointed when she saw that she couldn’t cook anything; she ran out of rice and some dishes. She just remembered that she hadn’t done grocery shopping yet.

“Fuck. You have a fever! You’re burning! Note to self, never trust when you say you’re fine.” “You’re getting too worried. It’s not that bad. I can handle the symptoms. I’m really hungry, though. I do have a hankering for some grilled meat. I saw the fruits and oatmeal that they got for the attendees inside. I think I need more than that.” I bite my lower lip shocked by my sudden big appetite. I wrap my arms around my torso and bend at the abrupt surge of ache in my abdomen area.

As more of these disturbing questions pop up in my mind, my head buzzes with pain and the pain flows to my stomach, making it growl. Just then, I realize that amidst all the drama, I haven’t eaten anything yet. I instantly sit up, wondering what I’m supposed to do when my door suddenly throws open………….

Then he pounces upon him and they start fighting like a bunch of kids whose lunch got snatched. Charlie huffs and looks at me pleadingly. I shrug again and look back at my client who is shaking his head. In the next few hours, I help other clients with their regular exercises and get busy with my job. At some point, I feel the need to pee and I go to the toilet. When I’m done, my stomach growls with hunger. I knew I was hungry when I skipped lunch. I just didn’t feel like eating today. Strangely, it felt boring.

“What in the holy pineapples is going on.” I whisper to myself as I walk closer to the set table. I've hardly had anything to eat all day. The aroma from the food makes my intestines grumble. Everything looks so delicious and I should dig in right now, but I can't. Because nervousness has snatched my appetite and taken off. My intestines form knots in my stomach and I'm sweating internally. I wish someone could explain to me why I'm being treated so nicely. This is not the scenario I was expecting to encounter.

For someone who complained about his wife’s feeding, I am doing a terrible job of taking care of myself. A peek at my wristwatch and my intestines knot. It’s past twelve. I am starving. I make to stand but drop back into my seat at the wave of headache that hits me. Two fingers press to my temple in a circular motion, my eyes roll back and the headache gradually recedes. Forty more minutes until I have to leave.
