An hour later Evelyn was walking down the alleyway leading to the underground gambling den. The alleyway was dark and narrow, the walls covered in graffiti and the ground littered with trash. A lone streetlight flickered at the end of the alley, casting an eerie glow over the scene. The sound of music and voices drifted from a door at the end of the alley, muffled but growing louder as she approached. A sense of foreboding filled the air, a feeling that something dangerous and illicit lay just beyond the door.

Quiet, poorly lit, the kind of narrow service passage that ran between two residential streets and smelled of wet stone and uncollected recycling. No traffic cameras. An actual road. Underground. Wide enough for three carts side by side, paved in black stone veined with silver. Pillars rose along both sides, disappearing into darkness overhead. Between the pillars, alcoves held old statues, faded banners, broken weapons, and stone bowls filled with ash. Thousands of tiny lights floated above the road.

Timothy leaned into the grime of the brick alleyway, his lungs working like bellows. He’d seen plenty of transactional filth in Saati Town—desperate hacks, cold-blooded kills, and street-level hookers—but this was different. This was raw. It was high-stakes.

This alley was a shortcut to her home; if she crossed it, she would reach her neighborhood in just a few minutes. With that thought in mind, she quickened her pace. The alley stretched on longer than she expected, and after a few minutes, she found herself in the middle of it. There were no street lights in this part of the alley. Tatiana pulled out her phone to use its flashlight, but seeing that it was down to 3% battery, she hesitated and decided against it. She turned off her phone and continued walking. Suddenly, she heard a sound behind her. Listening closely, she recognized it as footsteps, and they were getting closer.

The alleys behind the warehouse were narrow…walls dripping with old posters, broken vents, and shadows that moved when no one touched them. I walked faster. Whoever it was, they were good. Not noisy. Not obvious. But careless enough to follow a girl who wanted to be followed. I turned into a tighter alley, a dead end if you didn’t know what you were doing. I did. At the very end, buried beneath a pile of old crates and wet tarp, was a maintenance tunnel that led to the back of a textile factory two streets over. I paused mid-step. Let them think I was cornered.

My breath hitched in my throat. I followed the almost imperceptible scent of Darren, a faint, sweet ozone that mingled with the acrid tang of rising fear. It led me further into the winding, grimy labyrinth of the alleyways, a treacherous path. I rounded a sharp corner, skidding to a halt. The alley opened into a small, desolate courtyard, hemmed in by looming, derelict buildings. The only light came from a single, broken streetlamp casting long, dancing shadows.

And the default was always Alley 4. I found it between a noodle place with a broken sign and a pharmacy that had burned out a long time ago. A gap in the buildings. No lights. The neon from the main road didn't reach past the first few steps. Into the dark. Wet ground. Old rubbish and rain. Water dripping from something broken above. Back to the wall, brass bar in hand, waiting. Ten minutes. The cold worked in slowly. Fingers went stiff around the bar. Street noise became a low hum behind me.
