This alley was a shortcut to her home; if she crossed it, she would reach her neighborhood in just a few minutes. With that thought in mind, she quickened her pace. The alley stretched on longer than she expected, and after a few minutes, she found herself in the middle of it. There were no street lights in this part of the alley. Tatiana pulled out her phone to use its flashlight, but seeing that it was down to 3% battery, she hesitated and decided against it. She turned off her phone and continued walking. Suddenly, she heard a sound behind her. Listening closely, she recognized it as footsteps, and they were getting closer.

The alleys behind the warehouse were narrow…walls dripping with old posters, broken vents, and shadows that moved when no one touched them. I walked faster. Whoever it was, they were good. Not noisy. Not obvious. But careless enough to follow a girl who wanted to be followed. I turned into a tighter alley, a dead end if you didn’t know what you were doing. I did. At the very end, buried beneath a pile of old crates and wet tarp, was a maintenance tunnel that led to the back of a textile factory two streets over. I paused mid-step. Let them think I was cornered.

My breath hitched in my throat. I followed the almost imperceptible scent of Darren, a faint, sweet ozone that mingled with the acrid tang of rising fear. It led me further into the winding, grimy labyrinth of the alleyways, a treacherous path. I rounded a sharp corner, skidding to a halt. The alley opened into a small, desolate courtyard, hemmed in by looming, derelict buildings. The only light came from a single, broken streetlamp casting long, dancing shadows.

And the default was always Alley 4. I found it between a noodle place with a broken sign and a pharmacy that had burned out a long time ago. A gap in the buildings. No lights. The neon from the main road didn't reach past the first few steps. Into the dark. Wet ground. Old rubbish and rain. Water dripping from something broken above. Back to the wall, brass bar in hand, waiting. Ten minutes. The cold worked in slowly. Fingers went stiff around the bar. Street noise became a low hum behind me.

I gave the street a full five minutes before I let myself believe it was clean and crossed toward the alley mouth. The alley ran behind three buildings, the hardware store and a shuttered dry cleaner and a unit with no sign at all, and the drop was supposed to be the third one, a service door with a keypad Lena's old method would have wired to open on a code instead of a key. I checked the street both directions before I crossed it. Empty.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting an amber glow over the city as the rain began to fall, slicking the streets with a sheen of water that reflected the neon lights. In the heart of the metropolis, two figures stood at opposite ends of a crowded alleyway, their eyes locked in a silent battle of wills.

You must know I could never betray you'. The alley came up on us before I realized we had turned off the main street. It was narrow, flanked by tall buildings on either side, the kind of passage easy to wander into. My footsteps padded quietly on the cracked concrete as I followed Harry, echoing faintly between the walls. “Harry?” I called, slowing a little as I stared at the end of the alley. It was a dead end, just a grimy wall with faded graffiti and a rusted dumpster nearby. He didn’t respond. I stopped walking and looked around, confused. “Harry, what are we—”

My hand tightened around Rufio’s leash, knuckles aching. We took a sharp left into an alley I’d never noticed before, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Trash bins lined the wall, their lids tilted open like mouths mid-scream. Graffiti bled across the bricks in looping red and black tags. Alan didn’t hesitate. I followed, heart pounding with every step. We’d made it two blocks when I noticed the man.

"Please. Just... lead." "You can't walk without support." "I will crawl. Or lean on the wall. Just don't... don't grip." "Okay. Okay. Follow me." Elion ran to the end of the alley. He checked the street. Police cars were at the front of the motel. Blue lights flashed. "Back way," Elion whispered. "Subway entrance is two blocks east." Cale limped behind him. He was dragging his cast, using the brick wall for support. Every time his clothes brushed the wall, he winced.

The tunnel’s end was blocked by another rusted grate and a haphazard pile of stones that looked like someone had once tried to seal it and given up halfway. Jace and the Ashridge scout eased the rocks aside carefully, laying them down without clatter. Cold night air gusted in, washed clean compared to the fetid tunnel. Kael peered out first. They were in a narrow alley, walls of cheap brick on either side, the back ends of cramped houses hemming them in. Beyond the alley’s mouth, a faint, flickering orange light marked a larger street.
