Mostly, not enough to stop them, but enough to slow them. We hit the alley beyond the cemetery at a run. Narrow brick walls. Trash bins. Wet concrete. One flickering security light. It feels like the kind of place people in stories die in, but not tonight. My phone buzzes in my pocket. Of course it does. I ignore it.

Ember The path to the old sanctum wasn’t on any map. It was stitched together from memory, whispers, and blood-stained warnings carved into alley bricks. Caelan led, hood up, blades hidden but close. Orion walked beside me, his hand never far from the dagger at his hip. We passed through the Witchmarket, where the forgotten and the damned bartered in curses and bone, and descended into the tunnels beneath the city’s spine. It stank of mildew, old magic, and something fouler.

I gave the street a full five minutes before I let myself believe it was clean and crossed toward the alley mouth. The alley ran behind three buildings, the hardware store and a shuttered dry cleaner and a unit with no sign at all, and the drop was supposed to be the third one, a service door with a keypad Lena's old method would have wired to open on a code instead of a key. I checked the street both directions before I crossed it. Empty.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting an amber glow over the city as the rain began to fall, slicking the streets with a sheen of water that reflected the neon lights. My hand tightened around Rufio’s leash, knuckles aching. We took a sharp left into an alley I’d never noticed before, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Trash bins lined the wall, their lids tilted open like mouths mid-scream. Graffiti bled across the bricks in looping red and black tags. Alan didn’t hesitate. I followed, heart pounding with every step. We’d made it two blocks when I noticed the man.

"Please. Just... lead." "You can't walk without support." "I will crawl. Or lean on the wall. Just don't... don't grip." "Okay. Okay. Follow me." Elion ran to the end of the alley. He checked the street. Police cars were at the front of the motel. Blue lights flashed. "Back way," Elion whispered. "Subway entrance is two blocks east." Cale limped behind him. He was dragging his cast, using the brick wall for support. Every time his clothes brushed the wall, he winced.

The tunnel’s end was blocked by another rusted grate and a haphazard pile of stones that looked like someone had once tried to seal it and given up halfway. Jace and the Ashridge scout eased the rocks aside carefully, laying them down without clatter. Cold night air gusted in, washed clean compared to the fetid tunnel. Kael peered out first. They were in a narrow alley, walls of cheap brick on either side, the back ends of cramped houses hemming them in. Beyond the alley’s mouth, a faint, flickering orange light marked a larger street.

They’re here. I follow the streetlights telling myself that whistling would be overdoing it as I open my senses, two sets of footfall, no three, another is coming from the other direction. I don’t turn around to confirm my calculations, I just head into the alley I made sure to pass four times this afternoon, it’s hidden and has no working street lights except for one lone bulb. I take the right, then another right then the left before I press back against the wall, and I wait.

In the alleyway where there are potholes full of filthy water, trash from fast-food wrappers, flattened cardboard boxes and piles of wood, Brett smelled the reeking scents of mixed human urine, rotting trash and gasoline.
