Before I could say anything else, she was up and out of my room, likely to deliver the said news of my return to consciousness. I dragged myself out of bed to make myself more presentable. The inside of my mouth felt stale and my limbs twinged when I started to use them again but aside that, I was fine. I tried not to think of the fact that I’d turned into a beast and killed two men without blinking. It would shatter my fragile sense of self right now and I so needed to feel like myself again.

Feeling my heart rate beginning to grow frantic, I increased my efforts to get away, but found that I was still stuck in place as the terrifying beasts began to swarm in on me. "NO!" I snarled, fighting for all I was worth. "GET OFF OF ME!" The world around me disappeared as the beast began to claw at my skin, ripping it to shreds and sending wave after wave of pain through me. I pulled it out and flipped it open in the middle. There was a drawing of a yeti-looking creature called a yowg. The description gave details of height, size and hair colour. Dietary information and habitats were also included. I flicked through more pages and found more creatures, some of which I was familiar with. The names, at least. Unfortunately, the book wasn’t organised into alphabetical order, so I had to search a number of pages before I found what I was looking for: Mouse King.

I paused when my fingers landed on the book I had been previously reading, the one the King had told me specifically to stay away from. Without much thought, I grabbed the book and turned to the chapter I had last stopped on, it was called soulmates to the beast. I read for what felt like hours about what the villagers thought about the beast and I found myself growing more and more afraid, the more and more I read. He had wiped out villages all around the castle in a rampage of anger, he killed thousands of people and left their bodies in the street and only stopped once the sun began to rise again and the sky became painted as red as the blood on his body.
