Dear Maya, I know you’re probably not going to read this letter and I understand if you don’t. I just want to check up on you and see how you’re doing. It’s been two months now and every day feels like too long without your presence. I really, really miss you, everything around me makes no sense with you. It’s almost like when you left you took my life along with you. But that’s okay because my life belongs to you.

After a minute and a half, my phone lit up to notify me that August had replied. August: Oh. I haven’t. I don’t think my mom and I actually ate. My dad isn’t home so no one prepared our dinner. Me: Do you want me to send you food? August: No. We’ll eat now. Thanks for the daily reminder. Me: What would you do without me? Hahaha August: Oh how could I ever survive? August: I’ll see you tomorrow. I knew then it was time to say goodnight. Me: I’ll see you then. Goodnight.

Text me if you need anything, I’m mad at you right now. I felt some relief. I didn’t have to go today. I had a day to breathe, a day to hide.

Always acting tough, always choosing to disappear when she was hurting. And now it has been three days. Three long, dull, and lifeless days. Without Nyra, work felt wrong.
