“Follow me, miss.” We stepped into a fancy elevator right inside the house. It moved up smoothly and quietly. She pressed the button for the last floor and counted sixteen levels. When the doors opened, we stepped into a cute little attic room. It was small but charming. A single bed sat in the middle with clean sheets. The roof had glass panels that opened up to the sky. Stars filled the dark night even with light snow falling softly. I loved it right away. It felt peaceful and far away from everything bad.

And once more, I find myself in an attic space. Silver moonbeams slit down through a tiny skylight, only the size of a couple of the slates. The light is filtered as it crawls through the moss and slime encrusted glass. A curved crack across the glass has been letting in the rain and directly underneath, more of the fungi sit like roughly stacked plates on what passes for the floor.

Finally, I reached the top. “Do you have a flashlight?” I asked. “On your phone?” “Yeah.” Alec reached down and pulled out his phone from his pocket. Turning the light on, he handed it to me to see. At first glance, it was a basic attic. Lose installation was laying across the entire floor but so were many cardboard boxes. No eyes greeted me so that made me feel better. I did not want to come face to face with a bat. “I’m going in.” I told Alec.

I wore only shorts and a vest top, Gen assuring me the attic was far too warm to need anything else. The attic room was musty and dark. It didn’t have a nice warm fire or cosy sofas to lounge in. The warmth came from the huge stone brick chimney that rose up the centre of the space. A stack of books and a huge comfortable bed were the only positives about having swapped my room. I knew it might be a bit rough over the next few months, but knowing that these people were here to protect me and little bean, made everything slightly less worrisome. The attic was hidden away in an old unused staircase. It only had one way in and out, something Celia mentioned we should change.
