The sound of the keyboard and the rustle of turning pages occasionally overlapped, then settled back into their own frequencies, with hardly a word exchanged. Close to midnight, my eyelids started to feel heavy. I closed the book, turned off the bedside lamp, and lay down to sleep. She knows I have a weakness for it and I suppose she made it specifically to cheer me up. When I try again and fail to go back to sleep, I pick up my novel and try to concentrate on the storyline but find myself constantly distracted. With a final sigh of frustration, I step out of bed and make my way towards the kitchen. I keep the lights off to avoid waking anyone or having them wonder who's down here.

I didn't sleep well. I couldn't as I kept waking at intervals, tossing and turning till sleep comes by and steals me away until the next interval when I'd wake yet again. I couldn't wait for morning to come and somewhere on the deepest part of my heart, I prayed that I wouldn't change my resolve when the morning comes. I had to put in the work. When I woke at around 4am, I tried yet again to go back to sleep but it had abandoned me totally so i picked up the novel and continued from where I'd stopped the previous day.

I didn’t mind that; instead, I took my pajamas from the walk-in closet, went to the bathroom to freshen up, then did my skincare routine before lying down on the bed. I intended to read the novel I had brought, but I didn’t end up doing so. Being awake alongside Jude, who now felt like a stranger to me, made me uncomfortable. Eventually, I decided to lie down and turn my back to him. My mind kept racing and felt so chaotic. I was sure he would definitely go to Bella's house after midnight. I couldn’t stop my thoughts, but without realizing it, because I was so tired, I fell asleep peacefully and woke up when a ray of light broke through and blinded my eyes.

I was lucky, because the front room was empty.
