I sat there and the quiet had his face in it and I had absolutely no idea what to do with that so I stood up and walked out and told myself to do something useful. … The painting room door was unlocked. The back wall had a large shelf. Floor to ceiling, covered in books and objects arranged carefully. There was something about the way it sat against the wall. Too flush. I knew this because I had grown up in a house with a secret passage behind a bookcase and I knew how people hid doors inside furniture.

Father traced his fingers over the books that lined the shelves, completely ignoring me. He came to a halt in front of the frame of one of the shelves, pressing against it hard. The books on it looked quite real, but the shelf clearly served as a door to a part of the library no one else knew of, except my father. He pulled the door open, just enough for both of us to enter, and then he did, gesturing for me to follow.

There was a leather couch in the corner, a bar cart with expensive-looking bottles of whiskey, and a window that overlooked the estate grounds. It was the kind of room that screamed power and control. The kind of room that belonged to a man like Jonathan Hart. I walked over to the bookshelves, running my fingers along the spines. Most of them were business books, biographies of CEOs and politicians, a few on philosophy. Then I noticed something odd. One of the shelves looked… different. Like it didn’t quite sit flush with the wall. I reached out and pressed against it gently. There was a soft click, and the shelf swung inward.

Before deciding to enter, I peeked into the room behind the door. It was dark, just darkness greeting my vision. And there didn't seem to be any button here that could illuminate the room a little.
