Isabella sat at the kitchen counter with a book open in front of her, though she hadn’t read a single word in ten minutes. The smell of something cooking pulled her out of her thoughts. We continued deeper after that, flushed and breathing harder. The chamber we reached was one we hadn’t fully explored before; it was smaller than the main archive but older. The walls were covered in even more ancient markings, not just Latin but also something that looked like early Christian symbols mixed with older, pagan ones. In the centre stood a small altar stone, and on it lay a single leather-bound book, chained to the stone. I approached carefully; the book was old, the pages brittle. Jordan held the lantern higher as I opened it.

Always me. “Morning, healer.” Kael didn't greet him. Typical. “What did you find?” I asked. Bren pointed at the water. “This.” I knelt beside him—and froze. Dead fish. Dozens of them. Floated up along the shore, their scales pale, eyes clouded, bodies stiff. All of them with the same odd discoloration beneath the gills—a greyish-green marbling that looked disturbingly similar to the veins spreading along the spines of the sick pack members.

The air smelled faintly of beeswax polish and old ink, and the only real movement in the space—besides the occasional turn of a page—was the gentle swirl of dust that danced in the light. I was supposed to be studying. The book in front of me—Runic Inflection and Spell Preservation: An Annotated History—was cracked open, the spine bowed like it had been read and re-read for decades, and still, none of it made sense. My quill lay forgotten beside it, the ink on its tip long dry, and my mind… well, my mind had wandered. But not nearly as far as Ingrid’s.

Maybe staying here wouldn’t be so bad after all. Shaking off my thoughts, I climbed onto the bed and grabbed my phone. I still had a chapter to finish for my new book. Opening my notes app, I started typing, letting my mind slip into the fictional world I was creating. *********** A sharp knock at Stanley’s door echoed through the quiet hallway. I wasn’t there to witness it, but I could imagine what was happening. Candy, desperate and panicked, standing outside his room, probably shaking. Inside, Stanley barely glanced up from whatever he was doing. “Come in,” he ordered.

Perhaps that had something to do with my birth father? Most of the books were leatherbound tomes, plain in appearance though they radiated waves of dark magic. On one shelf in particular sat a bunch of thinner books. I pulled one out and flicked through its pages. It seemed to be a journal of sorts, though it didn’t say who it belonged to. I pulled out one of the journals and flipped through its pages, freezing when I noticed the odd color of ink. It was the same as the page Denver had used that night.

The ‘real’ book cover, the one hidden under cherry blossoms was a half naked man, He had no shirt and showed tight muscles. all over his torso were tattoos His hand enclosed the throat of a blonde girl, she was dressed in a shirt probably his because of how large it is. Her head is thrown back in obvious pleasure and the title is ‘Choke me Harder.’ Definitely nothing a sophisticated young miss should read.
