Horror is that current under it all. Most of you know that horror came into my real life this year. I found myself in scenes I have watched countless times in various horror movies, and it was nothing like I expected. Horror in real life is not like horror on the screen or on the page, but real life is never like the movies.

I did the research. On my whole lower arm, these are my favorite monsters in fiction: Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and course, a zombie. My wolf replied. I shook off the "what-ifs" that held me back and turned back to the towering oak shelves. My fingers traced the spines of leather-bound books, all of them layered in dust that made my nose itch. "Focus," I muttered to myself. "One monster at a time." I immediately admonished myself. I continued to look until I found the books my dad had recommended. I pulled the four heavy volumes from the shelves. The History of Shadow Entities, The Blood Rites of the Unseen, The Search for Shadows and one volume of Pack Lore and Ancient Threats. I carried them to a secluded corner of the library. The dust felt suffocating, but I wouldn't let anything stop me.

“No, you didn’t. I remember, and I appreciate that. But… you must know that with the lights on, even this small lamp, you’ll be able to see how hideous I truly am.” She’s shaking her head as if she can’t believe it, so I feel compelled to describe myself. “Have you ever read those children’s books, meant to horrify young people not to go into the woods at night, that talk about werewolves?” “Yes.” She sits up straight in her chair, leaning in.

I grinned. Rina snorted. “I’m a little annoyed by people trying to turn classic literature into horror shit.” Kimi and I looked at her in surprise. “So, you prefer pure horror?” I asked. Rina rolled her eyes. “Have you met your sister? She’s all about the jump scares and psychological thrillers.” I wrinkled my nose. “So is your brother. I’m not going to lie, Blood and Chocolate and Warm Bodies were a compromise. As was Shaun of the Dead.”

I stayed with Adley in her small living room, watching horror movies about creatures that didn’t exist in this world, until darkness smothered the outside world, peeking in through the sheer curtains that made their living room feel all too exposed. “Zombies always give me the creeps.” Adley shuddered, “There’s something so scary about coming back from the dead, having your face and limbs rot like that. Bleh, no thank you.” “I can’t be afraid of zombies, not when things like ghouls and Librarian’s exist.” I let out a hearty laugh, trying to imagine a hoard of zombies maneuvering through the forest at night.

PATHETIC DRAMATIC melted and re‑formed. SCARED CREATIVE “I made horror because I was scared,” I said. “Not because I was weak. I wrote bad things happening because bad things *were* happening, and it was the only way I could stand to look at them without going numb.” Memory flickered behind my eyes unbidden: me at thirteen, hunched over a spiral notebook while my parents argued in the next room. Me at sixteen, typing frantically after my sister had rolled her eyes at something that had gutted me. I'm hiding in horror books because at least *there is fear that had shape and rules and endings.

They tore through flesh like paper. One old man said he saw a child disappear in the blink of an eye. There was no blood. No scream. Just… gone.” Sophia paled. In the darkest nights and deepest shadows, the Skinning of the Minds lurks, awaiting its next victim, poised to sink its claws into the minds of those unfortunate enough to cross its path.
