I was sure it had been a good idea; after all, it was just Christmas decorations, right? But the way with which he had shamelessly blurted that he hated Christmas, and remained unremorseful about it even till date…I felt a shiver go down my spine, but definitely not in a good way. Because he leaned in so close, I could clearly see the red marks on his neck and smell the sickly sweet perfume that obviously wasn't his. Knowing the scent belonged to my own sister made my stomach turn.

“Then you must hate how little you own me.” The air shifted. Something dangerous flickered in his eyes. He leaned closer, his voice dropping. “You don’t get to say things like that unless you’re prepared for consequences.” Her pulse kicked. “I’ve always been prepared.” Before he could reply, another presence slid into the space beside her, warm and careless. “Easy, brother. It’s Christmas.” Sebastian Blackwood. Younger by four years. Vice chairman. The charm to Julian’s steel. Where Julian cut, Sebastian burned.

But he obeyed, stepping back exactly one pace. Bryce swallowed. “Look, can we all calm down? It’s Christmas. I didn’t come here to fight.” No. He came here to win. To pretend nothing had happened. Dr. Davy.” He glanced at the gift bag she was holding. “He came bearing gifts, huh?” She laughed. “It’s Christmas.” “Well,” Daniel said, smiling, “now I need to up my game.” “It’s not a competition,” she said. “You think so?” “I know so.” He started the car. “We’re going skating first. The movie is in three hours.”

It’s the scent of fancy leather and that strong, sweet cologne. Calvin. I’m twelve again. Then fourteen. Then seventeen. The years bleed together in the dark. I’m trapped in the Pike mansion, the doors locked from the outside. I can hear the floorboards creaking. Creak. Creak. Creak. "Where are you, little brother?" His voice is like a silk noose. What's up?" He launched into a shaky explanation, sounding extremely humble. But he had no idea I already knew about the stolen black card. All he could do was lie about pooling money with friends for the trip and how they were now short of cash. He hoped I could help him out.
