I smiled and wiped it up, cradling the phone between my ear and neck. “Fire away,” I said. “We’re taking a trip. A business trip. Overseas,” he said. My heart fluttered. That sounded exciting! “Where to?” I asked as I wrung out the orange-juice soaked cloth. “Mamma, more,” Billy said, holding out his plate. I scooped out more pasta while Mr. Johnson continued. “It’s in the US. Just outside of New York. A smaller city called Summerset.” I dropped the cloth.

Her brows came together in a frown. “Hey, this is home. What happened?” That wasn’t what Billy expected. He assumed she’d have a few bumpy days. This, though, came out of the left field. “Jeremy called me ugly and fat.” Her small hands flew out around her to show her compact form. Then her arms flapped down before she stomped up the walk to the Inn. “Did you tell Ms. Summer?” Now Billy needed to trail after her to find out the entire story. “She told me he’s acting like that because he wanted to be my friend. What friend says things like that? She’s crazy. I don’t want to go back.”

But now, she was packing her belongings, her aunt Daisy and uncle Mike by her side. As D'Andre addressed the Summerfield community, Maiari was already on a bus, leaving behind a chapter of her life that had become too painful to bear. The future was uncertain, but she was determined to find her own path, far away from the scrutiny of rumors and the weight of expectations.

Hoping Alison might be able to explain, I get up, glaring at William, who is too wrapped up in Carrie he doesn't notice anyway. Alison follows me upstairs and into my room, running her fingers along the spines of my books as she reads the titles. "What's going on down there?" After what feels like an eternity of waiting, I finally snap and ask her. "Billy's got a plan to show your mum what his dad's really like so she dumps him. I'm sorry, I actually think you seem pretty cool and I don't want you or your mum to get hurt." She gives me a sympathetic smile, coming to sit on my bed next to me. "William's a dick though, or at least that's all he's concerned about. His dick."

As soon as my head hits the mattress, I find myself being pulled into another dreamless slumber. Summer did not want to cause Samson trouble. He had just taken over the family business, and there were many things he had to do on his own. She packed up the pork ribs soup with the intention to go to the company. “Is that Summer Plath? Isn’t she the woman in the video online?” “Heavens, she’s seriously shameless! Can’t she be content? Isn’t it enough that she already has Chairman Ardly? She even went off to seduce Jasper Miller.”

Whether I was happy or not, I didn’t have an answer, but I was living freely. I had no plans to undergo treatment, so I treated every single day as if it were my last. I stayed up late binge‑watching shows, trying thrilling games, and eating junk food as if without a care. I did everything I never dared to do before, as if making up for an entire lifetime at once. That was, until my best friend Willow Andrews returned from studying abroad. Instead of going home first, she came straight to my place, dragging her suitcase behind her. After seeing me, she gave me a once‑over, then locked eyes with me and asked, “Sadie, are you sick?”

Chase would have come looking for me if he suspected anything. "Well, Billy isn't the only reason why you've been like this these past few days, right?" Summer asked me, changing the topic out of nowhere. I looked at her shocked, "What do you mean?" Smiling calmly, Summer began speaking again, "I can tell that Billy isn't the only reason you are worried. You did not tell Chavez about it but I am not stupid and I can tell. You still can't get over him right?" It didn't seem like she was asking me a question.

‘I wonder what he’s doing about the rumors, though…’ All of Billy’s problems could easily be solved if he just went to the Library and developed an interest in the same things that Alicia was passionate about. ‘I mean, she even talks to someone like me, who's basically a nobody. I bet if it were Billy, they'd have more in common…’ But Rey knew Billy would never make that effort. Even back on Earth, Billy had a disdain for books and struggled academically. ‘I know I’m not a genius or anything, but at least I was average.’

Billy continued. “Listen, every Sunday she relaxes on the couch, reading her e-books and listening to one of her precious records. Mind you that all of them are organized in alphabetical order. A few days ago, just to test her, I mixed them up, pulled a few out, and left them around...” “Why did you do that?” Shawn asked shaking his head with bafflement. ‘Because I was horny as hell!’ Billy thought but never expressed it out loud in front of his cousin. Instead, he tried to put it differently, without unveiling that he wanted to have sex with Stephanie again.
