There was peace in the deep, and a stillness I hadn’t realized I’d needed. We kept going. Eventually, the seafloor changed. The terrain smoothed into wide-open sand beds, broken occasionally by crumbled stone pillars, scattered statues, and the skeletons of long-forgotten buildings, now worn by time and tide. Vines of coral and sea moss wrapped around the broken walls like gentle hands, reclaiming what once was. I slowed, pulling gently on Kairos’s hand. “What is this place?” Kairos looked at the ruins with a softness in his eyes. “This is the Lost City,” he said. “It was once the heart of our people. My great-grandfather lived here, long before the migration.”

She whispered to the plants and trees, asking for their assistance in finding the lost city. After several days of travel, they finally arrived at the entrance to the lost city. The sight before them was breathtaking. Massive stone walls, covered in ancient runes and ivy, rose up from the forest floor. The air was thick with an aura of ancient power, and a sense of awe washed over the clan members. "We've found it," Kai said, his voice filled with wonder. "The lost city of Elarion." The entrance to the city was guarded by two colossal stone statues, their eyes glowing with a faint, otherworldly light. A child hid behind his mother’s coat. An old man touched the scar crossing his throat. I remembered the drowned throne room. The crown. Raiken’s blood. Grandmother splitting the bond. It was a place of power, long overlooked by the world over. Ethan stared in admiration. “This must be it, the place Selene was looking for. The lost city.” Clara nodded, her eyes scanning the ruins. “If the Ascendant brought Selene here, there has to be a reason. We need to find her, and fast.” They descended into the city, moving rapidly through the disintegrating lanes. The air was thick with the fragrance of rot, something dim and pernicious that made Clara's skin slither. As they wandered more profound into the city, they heard a faint sound, a voice, frail and tormented.

There was a string of bitter emotion in his voice, and soon it found its way to my chest. "Was?" I shut my eyes closed, not bothering to fight the knife-edge pain that followed. His end was quiet for a second before his broken voice followed. "We lost her again. We found a house in the woods, and she had been staying there with someone, but they had left. The place is a mess. Someone's after her," I turned away from the window, stalking the floor when I noticed the change in Cyrene's crystal stone. "I think she's still heading to New Orleans—" Asher was saying, but my focus was on the stone. It was glowing red. That was a first.

A pack? Yet I couldn't dismiss the idea completely, not when Bonnie and the whole village believed in me so vehemently. My head started to throb slightly at all the thinking. "That was strange" Orion says as we enter my house. I look at him with puzzled face. "Having a human funeral" Orion adds simply. "What do you mean? Don't you bury your dead?" I ask him. Genuinely curious about his statement. "We burn our dead on a pyre built by their loved ones, at night under the moon. We don't use coffins so that they can ascend" Orion says smiling.

When I next raised my eyes, the exact same pool was still there but everything else had changed. I was no longer inside the banyan tree. I was in the glistening and blacked-out Kingdom of Biringan, and the pool now formed the basin of a majestic fountain in the center of the town square. “I didn’t see any other encantos on the immediate streets, which impressed upon me the fact that the population of Biringan was much lower than that of a typical town in the human world. Ancient scenes projected across the cavern. Everyone looked up. And gasped. The images showed the Lost City. Not abandoned. Not sleeping. Alive. Thriving. Thousands of people walked its streets. Silver towers reached toward the sky. Children laughed. Families gathered. Life existed everywhere. Then the image changed. A disaster. The sky cracked open with silver storms.

“And they don’t know I exist?” Victor shook his head. “Not yet.” Ethan looked at the black sedan. Then at the mansion looming behind him. Everything in his life felt like it was standing on unstable ground. “If I agree, where would I go?” Ethan asked quietly. “The Cross Estate.” “That place still exists?” “ It was rebuilt in secrecy. Only the inner circle members are aware of its location.” Victor replied. Ethan exhaled slowly. “And you expect me to just walk into this life?”
