I smile as I grab her hand and kiss it and I say, “I can’t wait to celebrate your birthday, Penelope. I’m so grateful to have you here with me and any day that is all about you is something I will happily participate in.” She rolls her eyes, “It’s just a birthday, Donovan. They aren’t a big deal.” I’m going to make sure to pamper her every single birthday she has for the rest of her life. I want her to enjoy them and to forget about the fact that she never had one for the first 17 years in her life. Penelope It’s cute how concerned Donovan is about my birthday, but I truly don’t understand what the big deal is. A birthday is just a mark of you turning another year older.

She didn't wait for an answer before barreling on, "Also—I'm dying to know—what are you getting me this year?" Eugene's brows tightened, his tone flat. "Is that so? I'll have someone take care of the gift." But that wasn't what she wanted to hear. She hadn't forgotten the lavish gifts Eugene had once showered on Jacklyn. A thought struck Penelope, and she kept pushing. "But Gene, you gave Jackie an entire island once. I want something just as special. Can't you give me the same?"
