Chapter 13: The Weight of the Crown The sun rose over the mountains. It cast a blinding white glare across the snowdrifts outside the cabin window. I sat at the rough wooden table. I held a mug of tea that had gone cold an hour ago. My eyes were fixed on the map I had spread out. It was a topographic map of the Blackwood territory. I had marked the potential breach points with red ink. There were too many of them. The territory was vast and the borders were porous.

"Now that the Alpha has marked his territory verbally, can we please get down to business? We have an empire to dismantle." We all gather around the central table. Spread across the dark wood are the complete logistical maps of the Redgrave Territory, detailing every hidden supply route, every weapons cache, and every financial pipeline running between Silveroak Keep and the human borders. But here,” his finger moved to a dense, tangled stretch of forest to the south, “the Blackwood. It’s a mess. Thorns, ravines, old magic. His wolves hate patrolling it. They do it quick and dirty. Across the chamber, Alaric finally looked away from the shadows. “Why keep them?” Elowen’s expression darkened slightly. “So someone remembers.” Gods. That answer again. Memory seemed sacred inside Blackwood. The mountain itself preserved grief like relics. Eleanor looked back toward the maps spread across the table. Some regions had been crossed out entirely in silver ink. Others were circled repeatedly beside strange symbols resembling fractured eyes. “What are these marks?” Elowen stepped closer slowly.

“Okay, this whole territory is Blackstone.” “Okay, it’s a pretty large territory.” I said. “Yeah, but this area…” he said pointing to another section of the map, “…this is Ironclaw.” I look at the area and see there is nothing in between. “So, wait, Ironclaw begins where Blackstone ends?”

She shifted slightly, but did not wake. Good. She needed her rest. She needed to be strong. Because one day, she would stand where I stood now, carrying on the legacy that I was about to carve into the world. I traced a finger over one of the maps, my eyes narrowing as they landed on the Blackwood estate. I had never been there, not physically. But I had studied it, every inch, every vulnerable point, every weakness they thought they had hidden. Julian Blackwood was powerful, but he was not invincible.
