I couldn't believe I had been so naive as to trust someone so easily. I closed my eyes and let out a deep, shuddering sigh, attempting to find some semblance of calm amidst the throbbing, unrelenting agony that wracked my body. The wound left by the silver blade was nothing short of excruciating, a searing heat that seemed to pulse and throb with every beat of my heart. It was as though a thousand knives had been plunged deep into my flesh, each one twisting and tearing at my nerves, sending jolts of pain coursing through every inch of my being.

The Lions rears back, readying for their next blow, my blood glistening off their razor-sharp claws. I grasp for a blade, the heavy weight settling in my palm just in time—I’ll only have one shot at this. I brace myself for the pain as their claw nears my side. I know I’ll have to drive my dagger as deep as I can in its eye, anything else will mean my death. Hell, this may even be my final moments right here.

June’s blood coats the silver blade dark red. And suddenly I know exactly what I have to do. My breathing turns uneven as I lift the dagger toward my neck. Toward Tanya’s mark. The rotting thing forced into my skin. My jaw clenches so hard it aches when I press the flat of the blood-covered blade directly against it. The burn is instant. White-hot agony tears through my neck so viciously that black spots flash across my vision, but I do not pull away. I hold the blade there harder instead, forcing June’s blood into the poisoned mark while silver scorches my flesh.

I staggered, but I didn’t fall. My blazing hand, pulsing with dark magic, morphed into a sword that sliced through Warren’s face as if his flesh were paper. His scream tore through the battlefield, raw and guttural, as he staggered back. This was not ordinary pain—it was agony incarnate. His body convulsed, a spasm ripping through his chest, and his gaze dropped to the weapon now embedded beneath his ribs. My own blade, soaked in the darkness he had wielded against so many, pulsed with enough power to wound but not to end him. Not yet.

Blade collapsed, clutching the stump, shrieking in agony then this time he shifted. His spine bowed unnaturally, bones snapping as black fur tore through skin. His jaw elongated with a wet crunch, teeth bursting from his gums. His scream warped into a feral howl as his wolf took over, fueled by pain and madness.

Ariana opened her eyes. She looked toward the nearest corrupted wolf. It was young. Far younger than the ancient warriors surrounding it. Its crimson eyes burned with hatred. Or perhaps... Pain. She walked toward it. Kael saw her. "Ariana!" She didn't stop. The wolf charged. She lifted the First Blade. Instead of striking... She rested the flat of the glowing blade against the creature's forehead. Silver light burst outward. The battlefield disappeared beneath a brilliant flash. The wolf cried out. Not in pain but in confusion.

Something dark flashed in her grip. A blade. But not like Kael's. Not like any I'd seen. Black. Too black. It seemed to swallow the light around it. Thin lines of jagged symbols crawled along its surface, pulsing faintly like something alive. My wolf recoiled. Danger. Real danger. "Silver can't kill me," Mira said softly, lifting the blade. "But this – this was forged in my father's blood." Cold slid down my spine. She attacked again. Faster. Sharper. The blade cut through the air with a sound that made my teeth ache.
