Her eyes flash a bright red and I turn to look at Sephone, who blinks and looks at Bethany. “Enough! She never did.” I say to Gaia, who nods her head as we wait for them to make the first move when a rumble of thunder echoes across the sky. The rain starts and I tilt my head back and feel the water wash over my face. When I open my eyes and turn to look at the side and see Carter not so far away. He is looking at me, but I look away. The pain is too much.

The rainwater is cold and soothing. I close my eyes, letting the rain mix with my blood, my sweat, and my tears. Then my world goes black.

I didn’t need to look to know it was him. "Riven," I said. He came to stand beside me, close enough that our reflections touched. Neither of us spoke for a while.
