I knit my fingers in his, close my eyes, and wait. Blake falls asleep almost instantly, like his exhaustion was so extreme it would have only taken the act of sitting down to send him into a stupor. He makes good on my plea to take me with him, and my vision fades into darkness I can’t control, and I’m swept into a dreamworld that’s both foreign and shockingly familiar because I can feel him here–everywhere.

The room was deathly silent except for the frantic beat of my heart in my ears. His low voice and the one from my dreams overlapped, weaving into a single key that unlocked my carefully built self-deception with a sharp click. He was Mr. Y—the man who sang off-key love songs to me at midnight, and the very same one who had chastised me relentlessly in the day. I stared at him. His handsome face was so close, and the usual coldness and distance were gone, replaced by a fragile, pleading vulnerability. The light in his eyes flickered like a candle tossed all night by a stormy wind.

She found herself now trotting at the darkness without a deliberate destination. It was tiring. No matter how she walk, she would find herself to not be moving even after chasing the horizon set before her eyes. Where exactly is she? Is she having a dream? Or was it worse than she can imagine. They were growing bored and they had grown hungry while they chased her. As the night drew on, the shadow grew nearer and nearer, sensing the growing weakness in Ami as her steps faltered and her vision blurred in and out.
