Ellie's POV: My eyes felt heavy as I began to stir. I could feel a cold hard floor beneath me and a distant dripping sound was echoing around me. It slowly started to register that I wasn't in bed or anywhere that seemed familiar. I tried to blink my eyes open, only for them to feel sore to the touch and blurry. Just as I tried to move my hands to rub the blurriness away from my eyes, I could feel they were trapped, bound behind my back with cold, thick chains.

Yes, I had good friends in my last school, but none of them could beat Luna with their care. I was wondering why did I feel so strange after seeing this boy? Never before, with no other human being, has anything like this happened to me. I tell her meaning every single ounce of every syllable. “I’ve missed you – Hey what is this?” She halts midsentence and points to a book on the top shelf a few inches from where I’m perched. “This?” I say pulling a thick black book out from the shelf. “Yeah, let me see it.” She says and I hand it down to her and jump down myself to stand next to her. The book is plain with no title or markings. When Lamia opens it the pages are also blank. “That’s strange,” I say flipping another page in her hands.

Still nothing. Page after page — Blank. My pulse pounded in my ears. No, this had to be some kind of joke. The Black Book — The book so many had bled and died for, the book that could shift the balance of power in the mafia world… was empty? Impossible. Am I the first human to open it? Or had someone else erased its secrets? My left fist clenched, nails biting into my palm as my breathing turned erratic. Rage coiled inside me, hot and uncontrollable, but I forced myself to keep flipping through the pages — Until I reached the very last one.

I shake my head, waving the thoughts away to concentrate but they keep crawling back. I flip to a new page to get this done with but surprisingly it's blank. My brows pull. That's odd. A blank page in the middle of a book. I had found it weird that the book was without a title when I picked it absentmindedly. I bring the book forward to my face, squinting my eyes to see if there's any secret message but there is nothing. I guess it's useless. I exhale loudly and make to snap the book shut but the sharp end prick my finger.

I sat down slowly, placing it beside my sketchbook without looking at it. In front of me, Ernest returned to his seat too. Karl gave me a look as she sat down beside me while I avoided her gaze by picking up my pencil, and forcing my fingers to move. To do something. Anything. A line. A shape. A distraction. But my hand didn’t cooperate and the page stayed mostly blank, because my mind wasn’t here. It was still on the call. On the words. On the part of me that had wanted to rebel and the part that had just… folded. “Continue,” Dr. Hale instructed, her tone as composed as ever. “You have twenty minutes.”
