Cleaned‚ pressed‚ hanging in a row like they were waiting for someone to come back and wear them. On the shelf below the rack‚ folded with painful care‚ were Aurora's baby blankets. The yellow one with the ducks. The soft gray one that she couldn't sleep without. The tiny knitted one that the pack healer made for her when she was born‚ with her name stitched across the corner in white thread. I picked up the gray blanket and held it to my face and breathed in‚ but it didn't smell like Aurora anymore. It smelled like storage and cedar and absence.

She looks unsure but starts to open them. "Alpha," she gasps at the little blanket before starting to cry. I wipe her tears, and she holds it up. The best mom ever is embroidered on the front. It is color neutral, so a boy or girl can use it. I smile as she pulls out onesies and socks. At the bottom is candy and other snacks. "You are very welcome honey now open these Emma sent stuff for mama," he says, patting her head. She wipes at her tears and opens the bags, a smile taking over her face.

But the air here was heavier, the scent was stronger with that sweet and sour scent, threaded with something that made my wolf snarl. I stepped closer to the bin. I expected to find rags, but instead I found something else. Blankets. My chest tightened as I pulled one free, holding it up to the light. There was stitching along the edge, frayed from use. I’d seen it before— I’d seen the nurse folding it neatly, tucking it into a corner of the crib the day the twins were born. Baby blankets. There were two of them. Shoved down into the bin like garbage.

In his hands, he carried a small bundle wrapped in soft leather. "I wanted to give you something." He held out the bundle—a blanket, woven from the softest wool, decorated with symbols of protection and love. The patterns were intricate, beautiful—moons and stars and wolves, all intertwined. "For the baby. From me." Elara took it, tears filling her eyes. "Damon, it's beautiful." "I wanted you to know..." He paused, gathering himself. "I wanted you to know that I'm happy for you. Both of you. It took me a long time to get here, but I am."

I didn't know what to believe anymore. The next few days, I was a bundle of nerves as I waited for the blanket to arrive. I spent my time training with my mates, learning to control my wolf, and trying to push the nagging doubts to the back of my mind. When the package finally arrived. I ripped it open, my hands trembling as I pulled out the soft, faded blanket. The symbols were still there, embroidered in intricate detail, their meaning a mystery waiting to be unlocked. "What do you think they mean?" I asked, carefully holding up the threadbare blanket to show Liza and Kelda.

The pattern on the blanket was familiar. It was a burgundy colored blanket, with little golden rabbits on it that looked like something out of a storybook that my mom used to read to me when I was a kid. It was a folk tale about a rabbit and a wolf putting aside their differences and becoming friends, but it was only something I had ever heard in the werewolf world. As far as I knew, humans didn’t know this story. How, though? If this was Nina in the picture, or someone related to her, then how would a human family be in possession of a blanket with a werewolf pattern on it?

She doesn’t know how Marie got the information. “So, we wanted to give you our birthday gift.” From behind, another girl stepped towards Adira and showed the red blanket. Adira’s eyes sparkled. She is a fan of branded goods; shoes, dress, jewelry and bags. But among everything she saw that blanket was priceless. It is made from poor fabric but for Adira, it is a great treasure. “This is our gift for you,” the young girl said as she handled the red blanket. “Happy birthday!” the kids shouted energetically.

Instantly, he drops the books and runs to help her. “What is it?” He asks. “Is it ice cream? Or do you want strawberries with mustard again?” Scarlett blinks at him in surprise before bursting into laughter. “I just wanted to ask which color do you want our baby’s blanket to be? Pink or blue?” She holds up her phone to show him two blankets she wants to order online. Ryder scrutinizes the blankets as if making a life or death decision. “The blue looks too thick and the pink is too thin…” he murmurs. “The thick one will be perfect for winter but it’s months away and she’ll outgrow it. The pink is…”

But in workout gear, it’s a game of where’s skin. He’s got this incredible realistic grayscale full sleeve piece on his right arm of a mountainscape of a wolf pup sitting on a lake looking at the rippled reflection of a full-grown wolf. His legs are grayscale realistic mythology scenes featuring, you guessed it, wolves. His left sleeve is different, still grayscale, but it’s a Nightmare Before Christmas sleeve. And his back dude has a full-color Japanese Godzilla piece. And lastly, his chest piece is this grayscale twisted grove of branches that comes together to look like a guitar with a raven on the perched wings spread wide on the top.
